Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Texas currently has 634 megawatts (MW) of hydroelectric generation, which comes from 39 units split between 17 plants. This is less than 0.6% of the state's current capacity of more than 109 gigawatts.
In order to meet upcoming renewable energy requirements in Texas, developers are considering various hydroelectric expansion and grassroot construction projects. These projects include adding conventional hydroelectric units at two existing stations, and the construction of two pumped-storage hydroelectric stations and two conventional hydroelectric power stations. In total, these projects would add 1,972 MW of hydroelectric power to the state, increasing Texas' total hydroelectric capacity to 2,606 MW.
The two pumped-storage projects are being developed by Apache Hydro LLC (1,271 MW) and Cedar Creek Hydro LLC (660 MW), both subsidiaries of Riverbank Power Corporation (Toronto, Ontario).
Other projects include the installation of powerhouses at U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dams. These include a 5-MW powerhouse addition by Wright Patman LLC, which is also a subsidiary of Riverbank, at the Wright Patman Dam, and a 24-MW powerhouse addition at the Lake Livingston Dam by utility East Texas Electric Cooperative Incorporated (Nacogdoches, Texas).
The unit additions will be at the Toledo Bend Hydro Station, owned by Sabine River Authority (Orange, Texas), and the Falcon Heights Dam, owned by International Boundary & Water Commission (El Paso, Texas). The total cost for these projects is expected to cost as much as $3.8 billion.
Information on these and other projects can be found in Industrial Info's Renewable Energy Database.
