Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Canadian Solar Incorporated (NASDAQ:CSIQ) (Guelph, Ontario) is wrapping up construction of a solar panel-manufacturing plant in Texas, where Industrial Info is tracking $40 billion worth of Industrial Manufacturing Industry projects under construction. More than 60% of the spend is attributed to four semiconductor projects.

Canadian Solar began manufacturing solar panels (also known as solar modules) at its plant in Mesquite in December, and full construction is expected to wrap up in May. The plant is designed to produce up to 20,000 photovoltaic (PV) solar panels per day. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Industrial Manufacturing Project Database can click here to read the project report.

When Canadian Solar announced the project in June 2023, Governor Greg Abbott (R) weighed in, saying in a press release, "Canadian Solar's new $250 million manufacturing plant in Mesquite will bolster Texas' status as the energy capital of the world and secure our leadership as a global tech hub."

Industrial Info is tracking four major semiconductor-related projects underway in Texas aimed at fulfilling Abbott's sentiment. Texas Instruments Incorporated (NASDAQ:TXN) (Dallas, Texas) is constructing a semiconductor manufacturing plant in Sherman, about 60 miles north of Dallas, and the first two phases are underway. With a combined investment value of $13.5 billion, the two projects will add 1 million square feet of manufacturing space to manufacture 300-millimeter wafers for automobiles and other electronic applications. Subscribers can read detailed project reports on Phase I and Phase II, both of which are expected to wrap up in the summer of 2025. Two subsequent phases could stretch the work into 2028 before completion of the project.

Also underway in Sherman is another semiconductor project expected to wrap up by the end of 2025: the grassroot, $1 billion first phase of GlobiTech Incorporated's silicon wafer plant. It entails building an approximately 1.3 million-square-foot manufacturing facility with an initial production capacity of 350,000 wafers per month; the entire facility has the potential for a capacity of 2.4 million wafers per month. GlobiTech is a subsidiary of Taiwan-based GlobalWafers Company Limited. Click here to read the project report. Three subsequent phases could stretch the work into 2028 before final completion of the project.

Silicon wafers have high durability, reliability and heat resistance, which makes them a perfect foundation for housing semiconductor chips. Meanwhile, Samsung Group (Seoul, South Korea) expects construction of its $10 billion semiconductor chip-manufacturing plant in Taylor, outside of Austin, will wrap up by the end of 2024. It is the first phase of a larger complex that Samsung estimates will require more than $25 billion of investment and cover 6 million square feet. Samsung expects to produce advanced logic chips to be used in applications such as automobiles, artificial intelligence and 5G devices at the plant. Subscribers can read a detailed project report.

The Industrial Manufacturing Industry's data center sector accounts for about $8 billion worth of projects underway in Texas. This includes construction of Facebook parent Meta Platforms Incorporated's (NASDAQ:META) (Menlo Park, California) hyperscale data center in Temple, also known as Project Pasca. The first two phases of the project are underway, totaling more than $1.5 billion of investment, with the first phase featuring a 900,000-square-foot building complex, including 700,000 square feet for data halls and the remaining space going toward storage, administration and auxiliary buildings. Construction kicked off in 2022, and completion is expected in 2025.

Construction on the second phase began in December, with completion planned for 2026. Subsequent phases could stretch the work into 2030 before final completion of the project. Subscribers can read detailed information on the grassroot and Phase II projects.

The transportation systems sector follows the data center sector in terms of investment value, and nearly half of the transportation-related project activity is attributed to a $1.5 billion replacement of Terminal D at the George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston. The project entails demolishing the existing terminal and constructing a new, 780,000-square-foot facility, with 15 gates, among other work. The project has been underway since 2019 and is expected to wrap up around the end of the year. Gilbane Building Company (Providence, Rhode Island) is acting as construction manager.
