Written by Richard Finlayson, Senior International Editor for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Following the announcement of Toshiba Corporation's plans to create a manufacturing hub in India, NTPC Limited awarded Toshiba JSW Power Systems (Chennai) a contract to supply two 800-megawatt (MW), supercritical steam turbine and generator island packages. NTPC is India's largest state-owned energy provider.

Toshiba JSW will carry out the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) of the packages. The Toshiba Group won orders for 10 supercritical packages of 800 MW each in India, including for Tata's Mundra ultra-mega power project (UMPP); NTPC's Kudgi super-thermal project; and the latest order for the Darlipali super-thermal project. The company also has an order for two 660-MW supercritical packages.

In January, Toshiba reinforced its thermal power generation business in India by integrating the engineering function of Toshiba Engineering India into the Toshiba JSW Turbine and Generating manufacturing unit, based in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

Coal-fired thermal power plants are forecast to account for 60% of power capacity growth, and supercritical plants will account for 60% of the thermal power plants. These facilities will be needed to meet a demand growth of 16,000 MW annually through 2017. Rapid growth in power demand is also anticipated in neighboring countries.

The Indian government sees supercritical technology as a major tool for increasing generation capacity and efficiency, while reducing emissions of greenhouse gases. It is strongly promoting adoption of the technology among India's power utilities.
