Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Three new natural gas generation units are now online at Tennessee Valley Authority's (TVA) (Knoxville, Tennessee) Paradise power plant in Kentucky, the U.S. federally owned electric utility said Tuesday. The TVA is developing new power generation as it retires coal-fired units, and Industrial Info is tracking related project activity.

The combustion turbine units are in a simple-cycle configuration and will add 750 megawatts (MW) of generating capacity to the plant, which previously featured three coal-fired units. Two units were retired in 2017 and were replaced with natural gas-fired combined-cycle units, while a third coal unit was retired in 2020. The new units are designed to withstand extreme temperatures and will start within minutes when electricity demand increases, the company said in a press release.

"Natural gas is an important part of our transition to a carbon-neutral future while maintaining reliability," said TVA Chief Executive Officer Jeff Lyash. "These state-of-the-art units will allow us to respond quickly to load demand and improve flexibility as we add more renewable energy, which is not always available on demand."

In the press release, General Manager of Major Projects Jamie Cook says the new capacity is part of the utility's plan to add more than 3,800 MW of generation to the grid by 2028. "Many of TVA's new CTs [combustion turbines] are replacing older, less efficient units. Natural gas units are cleaner than coal-fired generation."

Earlier this year, the TVA board of directors approved spending $15 billion on new generation and transmission projects over the next three years, although the investment is not currently tied to specific projects.

The utility expects to bring an additional 3,400 MW of gas-fired generation capacity online in that time, including:
  • 1,450 MW of new generation at its Kingston Power Station in Harriman, Tennessee, which will replace the capacity that will be lost when the coal-fired units are retired. The $1.6 billion project entails constructing two combined-cycle turbines, two heat recovery steam generators (HRSGs) and a steam turbine, with the new generation expected to begin operating by late 2027. • 1,450 MW of new, also combined-cycle generation at the Cumberland Fossil Power Station in Cumberland City, Tennessee. TVA has said the gas-fired units will be operational by 2026 to replace power generated by the first retired coal unit. Engineering, procurement and construction company Kiewit Corporation (Lenexa, Kansas) kicked off construction in 2023. Click here for the project report.
  • 500 MW of new gas-fired peaking generation at its Johnsonville Combustion Turbines plant in New Johnsonville, Tennessee. The 10 generators in a simple-cycle configuration are expected to begin operating in late 2024. Click here to read more information.
