Reported by Annette Kreuger, Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Construction has begun on a five-story, 160,000 square-foot cancer research building at the Mission Bay campus of the University of California San Francisco. Designed by New York Citys Rafael Vinoly (reference: Pharmaceutical Tracker - Online Database), the $135 million dollar project has been in planning since 2002, with the Farnsworth Group (Corona, California) serving as the Design Commissioning Agent. UCSF tapped the Hunt Construction Group (San Francisco, California) as the builder.
With 46 laboratories, the Diller building will accommodate over 400 researchers. Research will focus on three primary areas: basic research, which sheds light on all forms of cancer; brain tumor research; and urologic oncology research, focusing on prostate, kidney, bladder and testicular cancers. The design of the building will allow easy collaboration among the research investigators.
Construction of the building is scheduled for completion in late 2008. The 43-acre Mission Bay campus is part of the greater Mission Bay project, San Francisco's largest urban development effort since the building of Golden Gate Park, and plans call for over 2.5 million square feet of research and teaching space.
