Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Uganda has unveiled an ambitious plan to boost its electricity generation capacity to 52 gigawatts (GW) by 2040, as part of its Energy Transition Plan aimed at driving industrial growth and improving energy access. According to the Minister of Energy and Mineral Development, the strategy focuses on a clean energy mix, with 50% of the capacity expected to come from renewable sources like solar, hydro and wind and 40% from nuclear energy.
The government aims to connect 80% of Uganda's population to the grid by 2040, supported by a $638 million World Bank loan that will enable 1 million free household connections, particularly targeting rural areas.
If successful, the plan will significantly improve Uganda's energy security and industrial competitiveness over the next 15 years.
To meet the growing demand, Uganda is also planning major power projects, including Ayago (840 megawatts (MW)), Kiba (400 MW), and Oriang (400 MW) hydropower plants.
