University Designing $55 Million New Steam/Utility Switch Project in Oregon

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Oregon State University (OSU) (Corvallis, Oregon) is developing a $55 million steam/utility switch plant at the Corvallis Campus.

The new steam/utility switch plant involves the construction of a 25,000-30,000 square foot building and the installation of (4-5) new steam boilers ranging in size from 50,000 lbs/hr to 80,000 lbs/hr, as well as the installation of 1-2 combustion turbine generators to produce 10 megawatts (MW) of power. Design is currently underway for the proposed plant. Carter and Burgess, Incorporated (Los Angeles, California) was selected to provide architectural and engineering services for the project.

This new plant will replace the existing failing central heating plant and will include a new cogeneration plant that will provide heating, cooling, and electricity to the campus. The new plant will also upgrade the underground steam distribution system and install a second telephone switch to handle voice and data communication demand.

Andersen Construction Company Incorporated (Portland, Oregon) was awarded the construction management contract and construction for the new plant is anticipated to begin in the fall of 2006 with overall completion slated for the spring of 2008.

OSU’s existing heating plant was constructed in 1924, occupying a 26,192 square foot building. Currently, the heating plant is the main provider of heating and cooling services to the university’s buildings. Presently, the building does not meet current emission standards and the steam boilers are between 32 and 42 years old. In the 1960’s a natural gas delivery system was added making alternative heating systems available.

Oregon State University was established in 1858 as a private academy in Corvallis, Oregon. In 1868, it was designated an Oregon’s state-assisted agricultural college. Approximately 19,162 students and 1,800 faculty members attend or work at the university. In 2005, roughly $208.9 million was used to fund research at the university.
