University of Arizona Completes Construction of Three Major Research Buildings Representing Over $166 Million in Capital Investment

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). For the past several years, three teams of construction crews joined students on the Tucson campus of the University of Arizona (U of A). Continuing the school’s commitment to growing its research infrastructure, work was underway on three projects representing a total investment value (TIV) of nearly $167 million (reference: Pharmaceutical Tracker - Online Database). Serving a wide range of research needs, the projects included the Medical Research Building (MRB), the Thomas Keating BioResearch building and an expansion of the Chemistry Research building. All three were completed this year.

First to be completed, the Keating project is both the largest and most expensive of the three projects, carrying a TIV of $65.6 million and adding 168,000 square feet of research space. The high-tech laboratory building was originally named the Institute for Biomedical Sciences &Biotechnology (IBSB). Designed by Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Partnership (ZGF) (San Francisco, California), the new labs will support interdisciplinary molecular life sciences research. Gilbane (Providence, Rhode Island) served as construction manager on the project.

Located on the same site, the recently completed MRB is interconnected with the Keating building. The 135,000 square-foot building carries a TIV of $54.5 million. U of A once again turned to ZGF for the design of the building, which houses laboratories and offices for 48 scientists focusing on six distinct areas of excellence. Hensel Phelps Construction Company (Greeley, Colorado) was on board to manage the construction.

ZGF and Hensel Phelps were brought together again to handle the project details for the $47 million expansion of the Chemistry Research building. The 85,000 square-foot facility consolidates the chemistry instruction and research programs into one central location. The new building is located next to the existing chemistry building.

U of A students and faculty might as well get used to the sound of construction crews well into the future. Next on tap for the campus is a $40 million Phase I project to build a new biomedical engineering research building. Currently in the design phase, the project teams are still to be negotiated. The building will house the research activities of the departments of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE), Chemical and Environmental Engineering (ChEE), and portions of the Biomedical Engineering (BME) graduate program.
