Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Fabricated metal products, such as power cables and automotive and construction materials, play a role in our everyday lives, and U.S. producers are building out their capacities. Industrial Info is tracking $5.3 billion worth of projects in the U.S. fabricated-metal product sector that are under construction.

Two projects totaling about 16% of the total investment are aimed at producing power cables that would strengthen domestic energy infrastructure. Construction of LS Greenlink USA's (LS Greenlink) $681 million brownfield high-voltage direct current (HVDC) submarine cable-manufacturing plant in Chesapeake, Virginia, on a 98-acre site near the Port of Virginia, began in April. LS Greenlink is a subsidiary of South Korea-based LS Cable & System Limited (Anyang).

Submarine HVDC cables are used to transmit power underwater, typically for connecting offshore wind farms or other remote power sources to power grids.

Work entails constructing a 750,000-square-foot manufacturing building and a VCV (vertical continuous vulcanization) tower standing more than 600 feet high--the tallest structure between Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Charlotte, North Carolina, according to LS Greenlink. The VCV method utilizes a vertical production line to continuously extrude and harden cable insulation by applying heat and pressure.

The facility is expected to be fully operational by the first quarter of 2028. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Industrial Manufacturing Project Database can click here to read the project report

LS Greenlink also plans to build a dedicated pier for the manufacturing area.

Another power cable-related project is Hellenic Cables' (Athens, Greece) grassroot plant in Baltimore, Maryland that will be home to manufacturing underwater and underground cables to support power generation and transmission and distribution. Hellenic, a subsidiary of Belgium-based Cenergy Holdings S.A., expects the plant will be fully operational toward the end of 2026. Subscribers can click here for the project report.

Meanwhile, TS Conductor Corporation (Huntington Beach, California) is at work on a Phase I renovation of an existing facility in Hardeeville, South Carolina: a new 301,275-square-foot facility will add more space for manufacturing carbon-core conductors for use in transmission lines, including HVDC lines. Operations are expected to begin by the end of 2025. Subscribers can click here to read the project report.

"This state-of-the-art plant will enable us to meet growing demand from leading utilities across the Southeast and nationwide," Chief Executive Officer Jason Huang said in a press release. "Our patented technology helps modernize America's power grid by providing more capacity while lowering project costs, making electricity more affordable and reliable for everyone."

Fabricated metal projects linked to the construction sector include Central States Manufacturing's (Tontitown, Arkansas) $300 million prefabricated metal frame building-manufacturing plant in Tontitown.

Kentuckiana Curb Company Incorporated (Simpsonville, Kentucky) is building a grassroot heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment plant in Simpsonville. The 380,000-square-foot plant will boost the company's manufacturing capacity for high-efficiency commercial HVAC units for large-volume air movement. Both projects are expected to wrap up by the end of the year.

Subscribers can read more information on the metal frame and HVAC projects.

Automotive-related projects include construction of Hwashin America Corporation's (Greenville, Alabama) $176 million grassroot automotive stampings plant in Dublin, Georgia, which kicked off in April. Subscribers can click here to read the project report. Hwashin America is a subsidiary of Hwashin Company Limited (Yeongcheon, South Korea).

Sitting on a rail-served site, the plant will supply stampings, such as chassis components, for auto assembly plants in Georgia. Production is expected to begin by the end of the year. The new plant will supply Hyundai Motor Company's (Seoul, South Korea) "Metaplant"--an electric and hybrid vehicle assembly plant in Ellabell, near Savannah, which opened in late March.

But nearly one-fifth of the project activity is attributed to a roughly $1 billion expansion at an ammunition plant in Middletown, Iowa, owned by the U.S. Department of Defense and operated by Iowa Army Ammunitions: a new building will house an assembly line to increase production of 155-millimeter high-explosive projectiles by 500%. Production is expected to begin in 2027. Subscribers can click here to read the project report.
