Energy Think Tank: Fossil Fuels Generate Less than Half of U.S. Electricity for First Month Ever - Fossil fuels accounted for less than 50% of the U.S. power mix for the first month on record in March, according to energy think tank Ember on Friday, driven by a rise in wind and solar power generation. Electricity generated from fossil fuels, including coal and natural gas, slipped to 49.2% in March, Ember said in an analysis of hourly data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), down from 57% on the month. More power was instead generated using renewable sources such as wind and solar, which in March reached an all-time high of 83 terawatt-hours, or 24.4% share of the total power mix. (Reuters)

U.S. Oil Rig Count Rises to Highest Since June - U.S. energy firms last week cut the total number of rigs operating for a second week in a row, even as the number of oil rigs rose to the highest since June, energy services firm Baker Hughes Company (NASDAQ:BKR) (Houston, Texas) said. The oil and gas rig count fell by two to 590 in the week ending April 4. Baker Hughes said oil rigs rose by five to 489 last week, their highest since June, while gas rigs fell by seven, the most in a week since May 2023, to 96, their lowest since September. (Reuters)

Spain's Imports of Venezuelan Crude Rise as U.S. Sanctions Deadline Approaches - Spain's crude oil imports from Venezuela in January and February rose roughly 59% from a year earlier as a key sanctions deadline set by U.S. President Donald Trump's administration approaches. In the first two months of 2025, Spain imported 449,000 tons of crude from Venezuela, up from 283,000 tons in the same period last year, according to data released on Friday by Cores, an arm of Spain's energy and environment ministry. U.S. authorities announced last week a 25% tariff on goods from countries buying Venezuelan crude oil and natural gas. (Reuters)
