Utah Hydroelectric Project Moving Forward – Latest in Large Portfolio of Active Power Projects in the State

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Central Utah Water Conservancy District (CUWCD) (Orem, Utah) is preparing to proceed with construction of a 12-megawatt hydroelectric powerhouse at the Jordanelle Dam, which is northwest of Heber City, Utah. The new hydroelectric plant is being built at the existing Jordanelle Dam & Reservoir in Wasatch County. Jordanelle Dam is owned and maintained by the United States Department of the Interior and construction of the dam was completed in 1993. Approval to build the new powerhouse was granted by The Department of Interior last year. The project is being constructed through a partnership between CUWCD and Heber Light and Power (Heber City, Utah) under a lease arrangement with The Department of Interior. Power from the plant will be sold to Heber Light and Power and their customers.

Presently, there are 22 units, including the units at Jordanelle Dam, in various stages of development. If all these units are built, together they will add 2,696 megawatts of electric capacity.

CH2M Hill (Denver, Colorado) has been selected to provide engineering for the Jordanelle Dam powerhouse project. The new facility will contain two 6-megawatt hydroelectric turbine/generators supplied by VA Tech Hydro USA Corporation (Charlotte, North Carolina), a subsidiary of Siemens AG (Munich, Germany). CUWCD is preparing to advertise bids for general contractor in May. Plans call for selecting a general contractor in August of this year in order to begin construction in the fall of 2006. Completion of construction and commercial operations of the new powerhouse is expected in early 2008.

Currently, Utah has an installed base of 94 units with a capacity of 6,781 megawatts. Of these, there are thirteen hydroelectric units with a capacity of 207 megawatts each. The last unit in the state began commercial operations in 1986.
