FedEx Corporation (NYSE:FDX) (Memphis, Tennessee) places its warehouses strategically so it can make good on its promise to deliver a package in three days or less. In 2015, the company invested more than $1.2 billion in expansion projects. FedEx Ground is constructing a distribution center in Houston that has a total investment value (TIV) of $118 million. Located in a 484-acre site and covering more than 800,000 square feet, the facility is scheduled for completion in August 2017. The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company (New Haven, Connecticut) is the general contractor for the project.
Port Logistics Realty (Dallas) is building a three-phase logistics park in Wilmer with a combined value of $500 million. Cadence McShane Construction Company LLC (Addison, Texas) is building Warehouse 1 and Building 2, each encompassing more than 1 million square feet. Wilmer is located south of Dallas. Warehouse construction in the Dallas area is at a decade high, with over 16 million square feet of new space.
Amazon.com Incorporated (NASDAQ:AMZN) (Seattle, Washington), is building a $191 million fulfillment center in San Marcos. Located on a 101-acre site, the 855,000 square-foot facility is scheduled for completion in early 2017. In the Dallas area, Amazon has two new warehouses. The online economy has driven most of the warehouse construction, as more people buy online for less expensive products and take advantage of mainly free shipping.
