Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--When it comes to speed, Amazon.com Incorporated (Amazon) (NASDAQ:AMZN) (Seattle, Washington) is still the leader in delivering merchandise to customers. The company is far ahead of its rivals because it has built a massive U.S. distribution system that keeps on growing.

Consequently, the time between the customer's order and delivery keeps shrinking. Amazon was first to revolutionize supply chain procedures to meet customer demands and make money while doing it.

Industrial Info is tracking 10 active Amazon projects worth more than $1.35 billion. Six of these projects are over $100 million each. Amazon has set off a speculative building boom, according to Bloomberg.

Amazon is building a 2.3-million-quare-foot fulfillment center warehouse on a 130-acre site in Kansas City, Kansas, where the company now has more than five facilities. Clayco (Chicago, Illinois) is the general contractor for the fulfillment center project, with plans to finish the $310 million facility in the spring of 2018. In Edgerton, Kansas, Amazon is renovating a warehouse shell, which will be finished this fall. Clayco is performing the construction.

At Carteret, New Jersey, Amazon is finishing up a $200 million, 1,063,515-square-foot renovation of the old Wakefern Food Corporation building. RC Andersen LLC, East Rutherford, New Jersey, is doing the renovation and will finish this September. This will be sixth such center in New Jersey. At Jacksonville, Florida, The Conlan Company (Atlanta, Georgia) began construction this month on a $200 million, 800,000-square-foot distribution center to be finished by the end of next year.

In Sacramento, Big-D Construction Corporation (Salt Lake City, Utah) is building a $130 million, 855,000-square-foot fulfillment center and will finish construction in June 2017.

By the end of 2017, there will be 10 fulfillment centers in California.

Construction on the San Marcos Fulfillment Center in Texas will continue until first-quarter 2017. The Conlan Company is constructing the $191 million, 855,000-square-foot Center. When this is finished Amazon will have seven fulfillment centers in Texas.

In all, Amazon has 72 distribution centers in the U.S. featuring same-day delivery in 16 cities, and 23 cities offer prime now delivery. It is also deploying Amazon Flex Delivery in New York, Chicago and Portland, Oregon, according to Bloomberg.
