Written by Daniel Graeber for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--As the Canadian military steps in to help with wildfire evacuations, the nation's central bank opted to keep its lending rates static amid U.S. tariff concerns.
Alberta this week plays host to a handful of energy summits as well as the annual meeting of the G7 group of advanced economies this weekend. Speaking ahead of the meeting, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said that, as host, his country will work to address peace in Ukraine as well as mounting concerns about the global economy.
"Canada has what the world wants and the values to which others aspire," he said.
The G7 meeting, which kicks off Sunday, comes amid widespread concerns for Canada. Protectionist trade policies from U.S. President Donald Trump are upending the global economy, as well as trade across North America.
Reconfiguring the North America Free Trade Agreement during a first term in office that ended in 2020, Trump has now enacted blanket tariffs on Canada, Mexico and other trading partners. Carney took the premiership after long-tenured Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stepped down amid internal political bickering over the U.S. tariff policy.
Tariffs have yet to trickle down to the full Canadian economy. The Bank of Canada last week left its lending rates unchanged after the economy expanded by 2.2% during the first quarter, slightly stronger than expected.
The bank said Canadian demand was essentially flat and the increase in economic activity was largely a result of firms buying up goods before U.S. tariffs were imposed. Not counting taxes, Canadian inflation reached 2.3% in April, stronger than expected.
"Recent surveys indicate that households continue to expect that tariffs will raise prices and many businesses say they intend to pass on the costs of higher tariffs," the bank said.
Elsewhere, Canada's multibillion-dollar energy and timber industries are under threat from wildfires in the Canadian Rockies and in north Ontario and into Quebec. Carney on Sunday met with emergency-response officials, saying the military was deployed to help evacuate a tribal community in Ontario.
Wildfires in the past have sidelined millions of barrels in crude oil production, though this year's season has so far spared much of the energy sector so far. Canada is the top crude oil exporter to the U.S. economy, with its 4 million barrels per day in deliveries accounting for about 60% of the foreign oil deliveries.
The Canadian government reported that total exports in April hit the lowest level since 2023. From March to April, exports dropped 10.8% for the largest percentage decrease in five years. Total oil exports dropped 11.7% to April.
