Among the state's largest projects under construction is Genesis Energy LP's (NYSE:GEL) (Houston, Texas) soda ash plant optimization project in Granger. New solution mining and processing units are being installed at the plant to expand its production capacity from 500,000 tons per year to 1.25 million tons per year. The project kicked off in 2019 and was initially scheduled to be completed by 2022. However, it was slowed by supply-chain issues caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, although engineering and construction work continued. The facility is now expected to be in service in 2023. Soda ash is used in applications such as lithium-ion batteries and solar panels. In a May 2021 earnings conference call, Genesis Chief Executive Officer Grant Sims said, "In addition to rapidly recovering demand from a resumption of economic activity and longer-term demand growth from existing applications, we remain encouraged with increasing demand for soda ash from a variety of the green initiatives around the world." Other metals and minerals projects in Wyoming include a grassroot, above-ground coal mine near Sheridan, in northern Wyoming near the Montana border. The mine will produce 6 million to 8 million tons per year using area, trench and highwall mining techniques to produce coal for 20 years for a variety of non-fuel applications such as a 3-D printing process, carbon fiber, graphene, carbon nano tubes and carbon-based building products, among other applications. The mine is expected to begin operating in 2022. Subscribers can click here for the project report.
Like other refiners, HollyFrontier Corporation (NYSE:HFC) (Dallas, Texas) is moving some of its production to renewable diesel, and the company's refinery in Cheyenne recently began a conversion project on an existing hydrotreater to enable it to produce the renewable fuel. The 16,000-barrel-per-day (BBL/d) unit is being retrofitted to a 6,000-BBL/d renewable diesel hydrotreater to convert pre-treated soybean oil, vegetable oils and tallow into fuel. Construction kicked off this summer, with International Alliance Group (Houston) providing engineering, procurement and construction services, and is expected to wrap up early next year. In more traditional refining projects, Sinclair Oil Corporation (Salt Lake City, Utah) is underway with work at its refinery in Casper that includes replacing the sulfur recovery unit, upgrading a fluid catalytic cracker and increasing the production capacity of the naphtha hydrotreater. The projects are expected to be finished this year. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Refining Project Database can click here for the project reports.
A natural gas pipeline also features in Wyoming's project activity. As part of a 140-mile pipeline running from Wyoming to Colorado, Tallgrass Energy Partners LP (Leawood, Kansas) is constructing 62 miles of 24-inch-diameter of pipeline from near Torrington, Wyoming, to the Colorado border near Cheyenne to transport up to 250 million cubic feet per day of natural gas. Construction kicked off recently and is expected to be completed late next year. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Pipelines Project Database can click here for the project report.
The University of Wyoming is underway with a sciences building addition at its campus in Laramie. The project entails demolishing existing buildings and constructing a five-story, approximately 165,000-square-foot building with a rooftop greenhouse for research and instruction in botany, zoology, chemistry, and related science and high-tech disciplines. The project is expected to be completed next summer. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Pharma-Biotech Project Database can click here for the project report.
