EDP Repowering Two Hydroelectric Power Plants in Portugal

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Energias de Portugal (OTC:EDPFY) (EDP) (Lisbon, Portugal) is repowering the 240-megawatt (MW) Bemposta Hydroelectric Power Plant and the 180-MW Picote Hydroelectric Power Plant in Portugal. Both projects will require investments of $180 million, and the plants are expected to become operational in the third quarter of 2011.

Engineering company Somague (Sintra, Portugal) is carrying out the Bemposta project, which consists of adding a 191-MW Francis hydraulic turbine provided by Andritz Va Tech Hydro (Graz, Austria). The Bemposta facility, located in the Braganca district, began operation in 1964 and is equipped with three 70-MW Francis turbines.

In March 2007, engineering company Opway (Lisbon) began construction of the Picote project, which consists adding a 246-MW Francis hydraulic turbine provided by Siemens AG (NYSE:SI) (Munich, Germany). The Picote facility, also located in the Braganca district, became operational in 1958 and is equipped with three 60-MW Francis turbines supplied by Sorefame.

EDP is devoted to the generation, supply and distribution of power in Portugal, Spain and Brazil. The company owns and operates 52 power stations in the Iberian Peninsula. It generates 8,824 MW in Portugal, where it owns and operates seven thermal power plants, two cogeneration power plants and 27 hydroelectric power plants.
