Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--REpower Systems AG (FRA:RPW) and RWE Innogy GmbH, a subsidiary of RWE AG (OTC:RWEOY) (Essen, Germany), have signed a framework agreement for 250 REpower 5M/6M offshore wind energy units. The first 30 REpower 5M model offshore wind energy units are scheduled to be delivered in 2011, and the delivery volume will continue to rise through the years 2012 to 2015. The agreement is expected to be worth approximately $ 2.5 billion, one of the largest in the history of the wind industry.
The units will be mainly installed at the planned Innogy Nordsee 1 windfarm in Germany, about 40 kilometers north of the East Frisian island of Juist. RWE Innogy is planning to install between 150 and 180 wind turbines at water depths of 26 to 34 meters. With a rotor diameter of 126 meters, the turbines are among the largest and most powerful wind energy systems in the world. Once complete, the wind farm will have a capacity of 1,000 megawatts and provide electricity to about 780,000 households.
RWE Innogy plans to install the remaining units in Great Britain and the Netherlands.
