Construction Set to Begin on $225 Million Scrubber Project at South Carolina Coal Plant

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Foundation work will start in the first week of May on the wet flue gas desulfurization (FGD) scrubber project at Santee Cooper's Winyah Power Station in Georgetown, South Carolina.

The four-unit facility, the largest coal-fired facility in South Carolina, consists of four 315-megawatt General Electric turbine/generator sets with four Riley Stoker opposed-fired dry bottom boilers. The first unit became operational in 1975 and the last unit in 1981. Only units #1 and #2 will be retrofitted with new scrubbers, with project completion scheduled in the first quarter of 2007. Units #3 and #4 have existing Babcock & Wilcox wet scrubbers and will be upgraded by changing out material handling, scrubber headers, and crushers, and will also install new pumps, mixers, and blowers. Construction on these two units is scheduled to start in October 2005 and be complete in December 2006.

Sargent & Lundy LLC (Chicago, Illinois) is contracted to do the engineering for the project. The company is a worldwide leader in the power industry.

The project originally was contracted to Marsulex (TSX:MLX ) (Toronto, Canada) as the equipment provider, but it was mutually cancelled, due to significant changes in the financial markets.

Other Santee Cooper-owned plants in the area include: The 578-megawatt Jeffries Generating Station (Moncks Corner, South Carolina), the 180-megawatt Grainger Generating Station (Conway, South Carolina), the 800-megawatt combined-cycle John S Rainey Generating Station (Iva, South Carolina), and the 1150-megawatt Cross Generating Station (Pineville, South Carolina).
