Proinversion Plans to Add Peaking Power Plants in Peruvian jungle

Español
Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Peru's Agency for the Promotion of Private Investment (Proinversion) (Lima, Peru) plans to add 98 megawatts (MW) of generation capacity in the Peruvian jungle as part of the "Cold Reserve Generation" Program. The project includes the construction of three new gas- and oil-fired thermoelectric power plants.

Tenders for the design, construction, operation and maintenance of the three power plants will be launched by Proinversion in the third quarter of this year. Plant officials told Industrial Info that construction would take about 24 months for each plant.

The Cold Reserve Generation plan includes the construction of the Pucallpa, Puerto Maldonado and Iquitos power plants. Pucallpa is in the department of Ucayali, and the power plant is expected to have a generating capacity of between 35 and 40 MW. Puerto Maldonado is in the Madre de Dios department and is expected to generate between 15 and 18 MW. The Iquitos facility will be located in the Loreto Department and will have a generating capacity of between 35 and 40 MW.

The awarded company will propose the sites where the plants will be located in these regions, as well as the amount of investment required. Based on similar Proinversion projects, the total investment value for the projects is estimated to be $65 million, and construction is expected to begin in the second quarter of next year.

Proinversion also has other Cold Reserve Projects in development: three dual fuel-fired thermoelectric power plants to be located in the mid-north (Eten) (200 MW); in the south (Ilo) (400 MW); and in the north (Talara) (200 MW). The Cold Reserve will ensure a continuous supply of electric power to the National Interconnected Electrical System in the event of an emergency.
