REpower Wins Gode Wind I Turbine Contract

Researched by Industrial Info Resources Europe (Galway, Ireland)--REpower Systems SE (Hamburg, Germany) has secured a contract to deliver 54 of its model 6M offshore turbines to the PNE Wind (Cuxhaven, Germany) Gode Wind I project, replacing Vestas Wind Systems A/S (ETR:VWS) (Randers, Denmark), which had been the preferred supplier.

As recently as its last quarterly financial results, PNE still indicated that Vestas would be supplying 77 of the company's V112-3.0MW turbines at Gode Wind I, giving a total capacity of 231 megawatts (MW). By switching to REpower's largest model, rated at 6.15 MW each, PNE will install more than 20 less turbines and increasing total generation capacity to 332 MW.

Vestas intends to build the first V164 prototypes later this year, with full production set to commence in early 2015--the same year Gode Wind I is due for commissioning. "Vestas couldn't assure us they would be able to deliver the new turbine in time," said Rainer Heinsohn, a PNE spokesman. "It was a simple matter of timing." He confirmed, however, that Vestas will still deliver 84 of its V112 turbines for the adjacent Gode Wind II project. Vestas signed a deal to supply Gode Wind II with 84 of its 3-MW V112 model turbines in February 2011, and had been expected to secure the deal for Gode Wind I as well.

Earlier this week PNE revealed that the sale of Gode Wind II to Denmark's Brancor Capital Partners (Copenhagen, Denmark) had collapsed after the private-equity firm failed to make the first two payments. This is the largest-ever offshore project with REpower turbines and one of the world's biggest open-sea projects with turbines in the multi-megawatt class. Commenting on the announcement, Andreas Nauen, CEO of REpower, stated: "We are delighted that PNE, one of the most successful German developers, is placing its trust in our 6M. PNE is also one of the first developers in Germany to switch to multi-megawatt turbines with an output in excess of 5 MW."

The first REpower 6M turbines installed offshore were recently erected in the Belgian Thornton Bank wind project, which will have 48 6M turbines once completed. For additional information, see March 27, 2012, article - Belgium Welcomes World's Largest Offshore Wind Turbine.
