Spanish Nuclear Vandellos II Stops for 18th Refueling Outage

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Córdoba, Argentina)--Asociación Nuclear Asco Vandellós (ANAV) (Tarragona, Spain) has begun the 18th refueling outage of Vandellós II nuclear power plant.

The facility, located in Tarragona, Catalonia, is equipped with a 1,087-megawatt (MW) Mitsubishi Power Systems (Tokyo, Japan) steam turbine, with a pressurized water reactor (PWR) manufactured by Westinghouse Electric Corporation (Pittsburg, Pennsylvania).

The outage began on Saturday, May 26, and plant officials informed Industrial Info that approximately 1,200 people and 60 companies have been hired for this project, which is expected to last 42 days. Apart from the refueling, necessary inspection and maintenance works will be performed at the power plant. From the total works, 75% are preventive maintenance and inspections; 6% are corrective works; 12% are auxiliary works; and the remaining 7% corresponds to changes in plant design and other activities. The refueling will start a new cycle of 18 months of electric power generation.

ANAV is an economic interest group owned by Endesa (Madrid, Spain) and Iberdrola S.A. (MCE:IBE) (Bilbao, Spain). Endesa owns 72% of Vandellos II, while Iberdrola owns 28%.

Spain has five other nuclear power stations in operation: the 466-MW Santa Maria de Garona; the 2,100-MW Almaraz; the 1,092-MW Cofrentes; the 2,060-MW Asco I & II; and the 1,066-MW Trillo.
