Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Woodfibre LNG Limited (Squamish, British Columbia) announced last week that Canada's National Energy Board (NEB) has granted a 40-year export license for the company's liquefied natural gas (LNG) production and export facility in Squamish, British Columbia. Industrial Info is tracking 44 projects LNG projects in Canada valued at $123.8 billion.

In a press release regarding the decision, Woodfibre said that the NEB had found the amount of gas to be exported surplus to Canada's natural gas needs and had therefore granted the 40-year license.

The facility is being constructed at a previous Woodfibre pulp mill and will be able to export 2.1 million metric tons per year of LNG to Asian markets. The site will have a storage capacity of 250,000 cubic meters. Fluor Daniel Incorporated (Sugar Land, Texas) is performing engineering services for the facility, which is planned to kick off construction in summer 2018 and will take about three years to complete. The project has an estimated total investment value (TIV) of $1 billion. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Among the other LNG facilities in British Columbia being tracked by Industrial Info is LNG Canada's (Kitimat, Columbia) proposed production and export facility in Kitimat. LNG Canada is a joint venture headed by Royal Dutch Shell (NYSE:RDS-A) (The Hague, Netherlands). The grassroot facility would have two 6 million-metric-ton-per-year trains and two 225,000-cubic-meter storage tanks at the facility. The project has faced delays in the final investment decision process as the prices for LNG to Asian markets has plummeted in the past few years. The facility has an estimated TIV of $25 billion for the first two trains, and could add an additional two trains at an estimated TIV of $15 billion. Despite the delays, the project could begin construction in the second quarter of 2018 and would take about three years to complete. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on trains 1 and 2 and trains 3 and 4.

Also on the books is Steelhead LNG Corporation's (Vancouver, British Columbia) planned grassroot LNG processing facility in Port Alberni, British Columbia. The first phase of the project would have a production capacity of 12 million tons per year of LNG and could begin construction in the first quarter of 2018, taking about two years to complete. Worley Parsons Canada (Burnaby, British Columbia) is performing design engineering work on the project. A second phase could add an additional 12 million tons per year of production capacity and could begin construction in early 2021. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on Phase I and Phase II of the project.

According to the government of British Columbia, there are 19 proposed LNG export projects in the province. British Columbia, with access to the Pacific Ocean, is ideally located for export to Asian markets, where LNG is in high demand. However, not all of the proposed facilities will make it to construction as lower LNG prices in Asia continue to affect final investment decisions, and the provincial government decides which facilities can move forward.
