How Will Tariffs Hit the U.S. Steel Industry? Ask Our Expert

Since the Trump administration announced tariffs on steel and aluminum imports back in March, 11 capital projects worth $595 million in the U.S. steel industry have been released on Industrial Info's project database

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Since the Trump administration announced tariffs on steel and aluminum imports back in March, 11 capital projects worth $595 million in the U.S. steel industry have been released on Industrial Info's project database. But it is still too early to determine the impact any such tariffs could have on the U.S., as exemptions are still being worked out in Europe and through NAFTA countries. Industrial Info is currently tracking 83 capital projects in the U.S. steel industry worth $15.47 billion.

"Depending on where you stand, Section 232 has either electrified or electrocuted the U.S. steel industry," said Joe Govreau, Vice President Research -- Metals & Minerals for Industrial Info Resources. "Domestic steel makers are ecstatic to get some relief from unfairly traded imports. On the flip side, steel producers that rely on imported slabs or other primary steel products are finding their business at risk. For example, Allegheny Technologies recently restarted a mill in Midland, Pennsylvania, that imports steel slab from Indonesia, which is subject to the tariff. The company has announced it will close the plant if an exemption is not granted."

If you would like to discuss developments and possibilities in the U.S. steel industry, Industrial Info will be at the AIST - Association for Iron & Steel Technology show next week in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
