Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited (CPCL), a group company of Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), plans to invest $5.3 billion to construct a 15 million-ton-per-year (270,000 barrels per day) refinery in Ennur, Tamil Nadu, that is expected to begin construction in early 2011. The proposed refinery is geared to help IOC improve its export market and maintain position of Indias largest refinery company when it goes online in 2015. Engineers India Limited (New Delhi, India) is performing feasibility studies for the project. Once approved, the companies expect to select a firm to perform engineering, procurement and construction services for the project.
Indian Oil Corporation was formed in 1964 through the merger of Indian Oil Company Limited (Established 1959) and Indian Refineries Limited (Established 1958). The IOC Group of companies owns and operates 10 of India's 19 refineries with a combined refining capacity of 1.2 million barrels per day. These include two subsidiary refineries: Chennai Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (CPCL) and one of Bongaigaon Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (BRPL). The crude oil and product pipeline network spans about 9,300 kilometers and meets the vital energy needs of the country. To maintain its competitive edge and leadership status, the company is investing about $10.65 billion during 2007 and 2012 in integration and diversification projects.
CPCL has two refineries with a combined refining capacity of 10.5 million tons per year (189,000 barrels per day). The Manali refinery has a capacity of 9.5 million tons per year (171,000 barrels per day) and is one of the most complex refineries in India with fuel, lube, wax and petrochemical feedstock production facilities. CPCL's second refinery is located at Cauvery Basin in Nagapattinam. The initial unit was set up in Nagapattinam with a capacity of 0.5 million ton per year (9,000 barrels per day) in 1993, and its capacity later doubled to 1 million ton per year (18,000 barrels per day).
