Active Grassroot Industrial Projects in Canada Represent $236 Billion

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The race to build out Canada's energy infrastructure is in full gear. In addition to this, record demand for raw materials and energy across the globe is driving development of oil sands, power plants, coal and metal mines, and the related infrastructure to get those products to market.

Grassroot industrial plant construction in Canada is reaching new heights. Industrial Info is tracking $236 billion in investments in more than 650 grassroot industrial construction projects Eighty-six projects totaling more than $28 billion are already under construction. For example, Canadian Natural Resources Limited (Calgary, Alberta) is well underway with construction of the first phase of the Horizon Oil Sands Mine northwest of Fort McMurray, Alberta.

The remaining $208 billion in projects are scheduled to begin construction between 2008 and 2014. These projects range from multibillion dollar oil sands mines and nuclear power plants to million-dollar oil field equipment manufacturing plants and beef slaughtering plants. Forty-seven projects are billion-dollar mega-projects involving mainly oil sands mining and upgrading projects, power plants and pipelines. An additional 275 projects have total investment value (TIV) ranging between $100 million and $1 billion.

The largest project on the list is the $6.2 billion Lac Cardinal Nuclear Station, which is currently in the permitting process. It is scheduled to be constructed next to Lac Cardinal near Grimshaw, Alberta. The project is being developed by Energy Alberta Corporation (Calgary, Alberta), which is in the process of being acquired by Bruce Power (Tiverton, Ontario). If built, the project wouldn't begin construction before 2011. First reported as a $700 million project by Industrial Info in 2003, the project has experienced similar cost increases because of increasing engineering, construction, equipment and raw materials prices globally.
