Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Perth, Australia)--Adani Mining (NSE:ADANIENT) announced plans to construct mining accommodation villages that will house up to 3,200 for its Carmichael coal mine and processing plant in Queensland, 160 kilometers northwest of the town of Clermont. The project includes an initial temporary accommodation camp for the construction phase of the Carmichael mine, housing up to 500 men. The camp will be later converted into a full-scale accommodation village, with town facilities housing an initial 2,000 mine employees.
Three more accommodation camps of 400 men each are also in the planning phase for the construction of a rail line project. These camps would be situated along the planned, 185-kilometer, heavy-haul rail line connecting Carmichael mine to the existing Goonyella rail system.
The proposed mine is expected to be one of the largest coal-producing mines in Australia, with a planned production of 30 million tons per annum of thermal coal expected in its first five years of operations. A maximum capacity of 60 million tons per annum is anticipated over the next decade, with an estimated life of mine of more than 100 years. The accommodation village ultimately will house an estimated 5,000-strong workforce upon achieving its targeted output.
Adani faced initial opposition from the local Isaac Council for the construction of the mining village. The council insisted on the town of Clermont as the preferred base for the mine. Other nearby towns of Alpha and Emerald were also considered as potential locations for the accommodation. However, none of these towns currently hold the space or the numbers to provide or house the workforces required by Adani. Hence, a 100% fly-in-fly-out camp was proposed to be constructed, which would later evolve into a new township.
Adani has appointed Calibre Global as the design engineering firm to assist with the project, including the mine, processing plant, rail line and accommodation aspects. Currently, the company is in the process of inviting expressions of interests and selecting a specialty contractor or modular village supplier. Construction of the initial 500-man camp required for the construction phase and the three rail line camps for 400 men each will kick-off during mid-2013.
The newly appointed Contracts Administrator of Adani, Toni Smith stated that, "We are in the process of selecting a specialty contractor and preference will be given to a local suppliers having considerable experience in Queensland mine accommodation construction."
