Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Investor-owned Adkins Energy LLC (Lena, Illinois) has begun work on a $4.5 million project that will add biodiesel production to its 48 million-gallon-per-year ethanol plant.

Plans involve constructing an 8,500-square-foot building and installing a small, 2 million-gallon-per-year unit that will process 1.5 million gallons annually from corn oil that is extracted from distillers grains, a by-product of ethanol production. A bolt-on expansion will enable the plant to double its capacity if the market improves.

WB Services (Sedgwick, Kansas) is partnering with Adkins on the expansion, which is expected to be fully operational by the spring of 2014. The project was made possible by a $500,000 grant by the Rural Energy for America Program.

Adkins went into production in 2002 and has since processed 165 million bushels of corn to produce more than 460 million gallons of ethanol and 2.3 million tons of wet and dried distillers' grains.

Adding biodiesel production to existing ethanol plants could become a trend, as producers try to squeeze every ounce of product from every kernel they can. Another Illinois ethanol producer, Patriot Renewable Fuels LLC (Annawan, Illinois), has started a biodiesel production unit addition.

Patriot Renewable's estimated $6 million project will add 5 million gallons per year of biodiesel capacity to the Annawan plant. Site work will soon begin, and the plant is expected to be fully operational by September 2014, just in time for the fall corn harvest.
