Aerospace Component Manufacturing Plant in Quebec Underway with a $40 Million Expansion

France-based, Mecachrome Group (Aubigny Sur Mere) is currently under construction on a $40 Million Aerospace Component Manufacturing Assembly Plant in Mirabel, Quebec near the Air Transat at the Montreal International Airport.

Initially announced in July 2002, Phase I construction for the new plant started during the first week of April 2004 and is expected to be complete in July 2004. Phase I consisted of construction for a 70,000 square foot main manufacturing plant, an 8,000 square foot paint shop, and an 18,000 square foot office and showcase area. A mandate was received for an oversize Phase II construction for the building. Phase II will consist of a 40,000 square foot addition, which is expected to start during the second week of June 2004 with completion in September 2004. Approximately 71 jobs will be created. Machinery will be shipped from France to Mirabel, which will include gantry cranes and five axis machining centers. The plant will be devoted to the manufacture of assemblies, sub-assemblies and complex components for the aerospace industry. Approximately 250 jobs will be created over the next five years.

Genephi Incorporated, located in Saint-Sauveur, Quebec, was awarded the Design-Build contract for the project. Mechanical and electrical bids have been let and designs were completed in March 2004.

Mecachrome Group, founded in 1937, currently owns four plants in France that specialize in precision machining for the aerospace and automotive industries. They employ approximately 1,500 people in Europe in addition to 130 employees in their Montreal plant in Quebec and include annual sales of roughly $300 million. Their clients include Boeing, Parker Aerospace, Airbus, Rolls Royce and Eurocopter. Groupe Mecachrome’s engineering and designs division consists of machinery including over 360 numerics and 25 digital apparatus, laser technology and state-of-the-art assembly and finishing equipment.
