AES IPALCO Schedules Scrubber Upgrade at Indiana Coal-Fired Power Plant

AES IPALCO (Indianapolis, Indiana), a subsidiary of AES Corporation (NYSE:AES) (Arlington, Virginia), is conducting preliminary engineering for an upgrade to the 574-megawatt Unit #3 existing scrubber (Flue Gas Desulfurization) at the Petersburg Power Station in Pike County, Petersburg, Indiana.

The 1,883-megawatt plant consists of two coal/oil and two coal Combustion Engineering tangential-fired dry bottom boilers, three General Electric turbine/generator sets, one Siemens Westinghouse turbine/generator set, and three 3.5-megawatt oil-fired internal combustion engines. All units came online between 1967 and 1986.

The unit #3 wet scrubber will be upgraded by installing new pumps and ducts, modifying cables and trays, adding an eliminator, and expanding liners of the stack as well as supporting equipment. The 11-week long project will take place in the spring of 2006. Units #1 and #2 are efficient and are not being considered for upgrade at this time. Unit #4 is being evaluated for an upgrade in 2007 or after.
