Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--A recent report from Mercom Capital Group (Austin, Texas) ranked the world's top 10 solar developers. The report considered operational and under-construction projects, as well as projects with awarded power purchase agreements (PPAs) in place. Only projects of 1 megawatt (MW) or more were considered. TotalEnergies SE (NYSE:TTE) (Courbevoie, France) emerged as the world's top solar developer, with a total capacity of 41.3 gigawatts (GW), followed by India's Adani Green Energy (Ahmedabad, Gujarat), with 18.1 GW.
TotalEnergies' rank as the world's top solar developer shows how far this oil and gas major has come in its resolve to make greener energy a part of its portfolio. Industrial Info is tracking more than $4.2 billion in active solar power projects from the company. Thanks to a large solar project presently under construction in Texas, North America leads TotalEnergies' active spending in the solar sector, although the highest number of projects can be found in the company's European homeland.
The solar project helping propel North America to being TotalEnergies' top solar-spending recipient is the Danish Fields solar farm near Bay City, Texas. Construction on the facility started in 2021. Three phases of the project, which upon completion will provide nameplate generation of more than 400 megawatts (MW), are presently under construction. Danish Fields also will feature a 150.8-MW battery energy storage system to provide power in times of high demand or when the sun isn't shining. TotalEnergies has signed a PPA for 100 MW of the plant's output with French materials provider Saint-Gobain (La Defense), which like several other companies, has set the goal of having net-zero emissions by 2050. More than 40 TotalEnergies solar projects are active in Europe, all in France. These projects are all smaller than the U.S. undertaking, with generation capacities ranging from 4 to 88 MW. Examples of projects set to kick off in the upcoming year include a 9-MW grassroot solar farm in the Picardie region of France. Upon completion, which is expected toward the end of next year, the facility will use approximately 30,000 monocrystalline silicon photovoltaic solar panels to supply the regional grid with renewable energy. Adani Green Energy has several billion dollars' worth of active solar projects in India. The projects range in size from less than 100 MW to up to 3,000 MW from a planned solar and wind hybrid power plant. In the process of wrapping up is the company's undertaking in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. The Phalodi solar farm will include six blocks of solar panels, each contributing 50 MW for a total output of 300 MW. Construction on all blocks commenced in 2019 and is nearing completion. The solar farm is part of an even broader undertaking to provide 750 MW of solar energy to the region. Subscribers can click here to see the related project reports.
About 165 miles (265 kilometers) west of the Phalodi development, construction on a 600-MW solar power plant near Jaisalmer, Rahasthan, has been underway for about a year now and is expected to be completed in the first half of next year. This project is part of a larger 2,000-MW undertaking. Subscribers can click here for more details of the project.
While both companies have ranked highly in the solar sector, they both are also very active in wind projects. Industrial Info is tracking more than $23 billion worth of active wind projects from Total and more than $660 million worth from Adani.
