Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Founded in 1665 in Paris and still headquartered on the city's outskirts, Saint-Gobain (La Defense, France) has grown into a multinational corporation that provides materials for the construction, automotive and industrial markets. Saint-Gobain has been on the cutting edge of manufacturing sustainable materials for the construction sector and, like many other companies, has set the goal of having net-zero emissions by 2050. To this end, the company recently signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with TotalEnergies SE (NYSE:TTE) (Courbevoie, France) for a portion of the output of a solar farm being constructed in Texas.

Construction started on the solar farm for which the PPA was signed, the Danish Fields solar facility near Bay City, Texas, in 2021. Three phases of the project, which upon completion will provide nameplate generation of more than 400 megawatts (MW), are presently under construction, more than covering the 100 MW of power allocated to Saint-Gobain under the PPA. The facility also will feature a 150.8-MW battery energy storage system to provide power in times of high demand or when the sun isn't shining. Construction on the projects is set to be completed early next year. The PPA will go some way toward helping achieve net-zero emissions for Saint-Gobain's industrial sites in North America, many of which are undergoing and planned to go undergo expansions. Saint-Gobain also is growing its North American footprint through grassroot construction. Industrial Info is tracking nearly $1.5 billion worth of active North American projects from the company.

Examples of Saint-Gobain's commitment to lower carbon emissions can be seen in projects such as the modernization of a gypsum board manufacturing plant in Sainte-Catherine, Quebec. The project is in the early phase of construction and entails replacing production equipment powered by natural gas to newer equipment powered by renewable energy. The equipment upgrades will not only reduce the site's energy usage by 30%, but also expand its production capacity by 40%. The project is expected to be completed toward the end of next year. Other Saint-Gobain projects are geared not toward emissions reduction, but toward increasing production capacity and plant efficiency. Such projects include the company's expansion of its roofing shingles manufacturing plant in Oxford, North Carolina. Construction began late last year and involves adding 225,000 square feet of new manufacturing space, which will be outfitted with robotic and automated equipment to help increase efficiency in the manufacturing process. The project is expected to be completed later this year. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Industrial Manufacturing Project Database can click here for more information.

The company is considering further expanding its roofing products line with the establishment of a grassroot plant in Bryan, Texas, about 130 miles north of the Danish Fields solar site. The project would include constructing a 160,000-square-foot plant and could kick off later this year, putting it on track for completion in 2026. Subscribers can click here to learn more.

Among Saint-Gobain's largest active projects is the expansion of a gypsum wallboard plant in Palatka, Florida, which is in the late planning stages. The project entails adding a second production line as well as new energy-saving and automation technologies to increase the plant's production to 2.1 billion square feet of wallboard per year. The project is expected to kick off in the first half of next year, putting it on track for completion in late 2025. Subscribers can click here for the full report.
