Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Air Liquide S.A. (Paris, France), a multinational company that supplies industrial gases and other services to a variety of industries, is moving smoothly on key acquisitions and some major projects in the U.S. Gulf Coast region. Industrial Info is tracking 158 projects worth $11.7 billion that involve Air Liquide in some capacity. More than 80% of the total is attached to the 10 highest-valued projects, and about 95% of the total is attributed to just three industries: Chemical Processing, Oil & Gas Production and Metals & Minerals.

Recently, the company notched up strong growth in the Asia-Pacific region, particularly China, but has seen some slowdowns in North America and Europe due to weak commodity prices. Earlier this year, the company said that it might complete its planned acquisition of Airgas Incorporated (NYSE:ARG) (Radnor Township, Pennsylvania) faster than expected. Last month, Air Liquide announced it had agreed to sell some of its U.S. assets to Matheson Tri-Gas Incorporated, a subsidiary of Taiyo Nippon Sanso Corporation (Tokyo, Japan), to satisfy conditions from the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC), according to gasworld.

The two highest-valued projects are the first two phases of additions at OCI Partners LP's (NYSE:OCIP) (Beaumont, Texas) ammonia and methanol complex in Nederland, Texas: a $2.2 billion methanol unit, and a $1.5 billion methanol-to-gasoline unit. The 1.75 million-metric-ton-per-year methanol unit will use the MegaMethanol process technology from Air Liquide Global E&C Solutions, a subsidiary of Air Liquide that formerly was known as Lurgi AG.

The subsidiary is performing engineering services on both the methanol and the 22,000-barrel-per-day (BBL/d) methanol-to-gasoline unit. The latter will utilize technology from ExxonMobil (NYSE:XMO) (Irving, Texas). The gasoline produced will be separated into light petroleum gas, which will be moved to storage; light gasoline, which will be blended and stored; and heavy gasoline, which will be treated for further processing. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the methanol unit and the methanol-to-gasoline unit.

Texas also is home to the two highest-valued projects in the Oil & Gas Production Industry to involve Air Liquide: ZeoGas LLC's (Houston, Texas) $1.21 billion gas-to-liquids production plant and $1.5 billion methanol unit addition in Port Arthur, Texas. The gas-to-liquids facility will process up to 21 million standard cubic feet per day of natural gas, sourced from the Haynesville Shale, and produce 16,500 BBL/d of sulfur-free, ultra-low benzene, regular octane gasoline. The methanol unit will produce up to 1.8 metric tons per year. Both will employ Air Liquide's MegaMethanol technology and ExxonMobil's methanol-to-gasoline technology. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report on the gas-to-liquids facility and the methanol unit.

ZeoGas representatives met with Port Arthur residents in May to discuss plans and gauge their interests and concerns, according to The Port Arthur News. ZeoGas says that if it is completed, the project, which still is in its permitting phase, would bring 1,000 jobs and 100 full-time, permanent positions.

The highest-valued project in the Metals & Minerals Industry to feature Air Liquide is Canadian Natural Resources Limited's (NYSE:CNQ) (Calgary, Alberta) $1 billion Horizon Oil Sands Mine expansion (Phase 2B) in Fort McMurray, Alberta. The project, which is part of a four-tranche expansion to increase the facility's overall capacity to 250,000 BBL/d, involves expanding the open pit mining operations and constructing Ore Prep Plant No. 4 to increase production capacity by about 45,000 BBL/d. Air Liquide E&C Global is providing engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Horizon expects to finish Phase 2B by the end of this year, and expects to wrap up the full series of expansions to the mine and upgrader by the end of 2017. Like many other major companies operating in the region, it faced setbacks from the wildfires that tore through Fort McMurray and the surrounding area in May and June. Canadian Natural Resources Limited said that operations at the Horizon facility were "stable," according to Reuters, but did not specify to what extent production was curtailed, if at all.

The five other highest-valued projects involving Air Liquide are:
  • $750 million: Yuhuang Chemical Incorporated's methanol plant, Phase I, in Saint James, Louisiana

  • $500 million: Yuhuang Chemical Incorporated's methanol plant, Phase II, in Saint James, Louisiana
