Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Air Liquide S.A. (Paris, France) recently signed a pair of long-term supply agreements with Marathon Petroleum Corporation (NYSE:MPC) (Findlay, Ohio) for up to 900 metric tons per day of oxygen at two of Marathon's refineries along the Gulf Coast. The agreement only adds to Air Liquide's already-lengthy list of U.S.-based projects. Industrial Info is tracking about $4 billion in active U.S. projects involving Air Liquide, the bulk of which are in the Chemical Processing Industry.
One of the highest-profile projects featuring Air Liquide's services is Shandong Yuhuang Chemical Company Limited's (Linyi, China) $1.5 billion methanol plant in Saint James, Louisiana, which has Air Liquide's Global E&C Solutions subsidiary as an engineer and technology provider. The project, which began construction in early 2017, is expected to produce about 1.9 million tons per year of methanol; a proposed second phase, which would not begin construction before the first phase is completed in about one year, would up production to 3.3 million tons per year. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports for Phase I and the proposed Phase II.
Louisiana is home to one of the two Marathon Petroleum refineries for which Air Liquide is boosting its service. The French company will increase oxygen delivery to the Garyville Refinery by as much as 500 metric tons per day. At Marathon's Galveston Bay Refinery in Texas City, Texas, Air Liquide will increase its current oxygen delivery by 400 metric tons per day. The two agreements nearly double the amount of oxygen Air Liquide will supply Marathon Petroleum in total, according to a press release from Air Liquide. Industrial Info already is tracking more than $2 billion in active projects at these two facilities; for details, see Industrial Info's profiles for the Garyville and Galveston Bay plants.
Earlier this year, Air Liquide subsidiary Airgas acquired TA Corporate Holdings Incorporated, better known as Tech Air, a large U.S. distributor of industrial gases and welding supplies. Airgas also is at work on one of Air Liquide's own projects, a $50 million air separation plant in Fairless Hills, Pennsylvania, which began construction in December. The facility is expected to produce 500 metric tons per day of liquid oxygen, nitrogen and argon. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Airgas also is preparing to begin construction later this summer on its estimated $54 million air separation plant in Cottage Grove, Minnesota, which will produce materials similar to those in Fairless Hills, and include a compressed-gas cylinder filling center. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Another subsidiary, Air Liquide Advanced Materials, is nearing the completion of its $45 million industrial gases plant in Upper Mount Bethel, Pennsylvania. The facility will produce the subsidiary's Voltaix brand gases, commonly used in manufacturing of semiconductors and photovoltaic devices. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Later this summer, construction is expected to wrap up on one of the key domestic biofuel projects involving Air Liquide: Cargill Incorporated's (Minnetonka, Minnesota) $90 million biodiesel plant in Wichita, Kansas. The E&C Solutions subsidiary is expected to process biomass oils into 60 million gallons per year of biodiesel. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
