Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Alabama boasts a range of industries with projects under construction, led by two high-dollar projects in the Metals & Minerals Industry. Industrial Info is tracking $13 billion worth of projects under construction in the state, about $6 billion of which is attributed to the Metals & Minerals Industry, as well as a variety of smaller projects, each with a total investment value of less than $600 million.

That activity includes the construction of Nucor Corporation's (NYSE:NUE) (Charlotte, North Carolina) transmission tower-production plant in Trinity, Alabama, which began in December and is expected to wrap up around the end of the year. Also underway, but in the site preparation stage (which Industrial Info differentiates from the construction stage), is an identical transmission tower-production plant in Crawfordsville, Indiana--expected to wrap up in mid-2025.

Both plants, which have a combined investment value of more than $200 million, will be located adjacent to two existing steel sheet mills. In the company's first-quarter earnings conference call in April, Nucor Chief Executive Officer Leon Topalian said the company is "advancing work" on the two plants.

"Alabama offers world-class companies like Nucor all the advantages they need to find success, including a skilled workforce, a pro-business environment and a solid support system," Governor Kay Ivey (R) said in a February 2023 press release announcing the state's respective transmission-tower project.

Another Metals & Minerals project under construction in Alabama is cement manufacturer James Hardie Industries Limited's (Chicago, Illinois) $500 million+ Phase 3 expansion at its plant in Prattville, Alabama, which produces fiber cement exterior products. The third phase will increase the number of production lines from two to four, and entails installing two additional sheet machines, to boost production of siding and trim. It is expected to wrap up around mid-2025. Click here to read the project report.

The Industrial Manufacturing Industry trails Metals & Minerals in terms of investment value, and its projects include one from e-commerce giant Amazon.com Incorporated (NASDAQ:AMZN) (Seattle, Washington). Amazon is building a 650,000-square-foot, $100 million inbound cross-dock facility in Montgomery, which is designed to receive products from vendors and facilitate shipment to replenish fulfillment centers that are low on stock. Subscribers to the Industrial Manufacturing Project Database can click here for more information on the project, which is expected to wrap up next year.

Also underway and expected to wrap up next year is construction of a $100 million expansion of an aircraft-assembly plant in Mobile, owned by Airbus Americas Incorporated, a subsidiary of European Aeronautic Defence Space Company (Leiden, Netherlands). The project entails constructing a 205,000-square-foot high-bay facility and a 32,000-square-foot metal building that will include a final assembly line for Airbus' A320 family of aircraft. Brasfield & Gorrie (Birmingham, Alabama) is providing general contracting services, and Airbus expects completion in the third quarter of 2025. click here to read a detailed project report.

Meanwhile, in the Power Industry, Georgia Power, a subsidiary of Southern Company (NYSE:SO) (Atlanta, Georgia), is modernizing the four turbines at its Bartletts Ferry hydropower station in Salem, which is expected to wrap up in 2027.

Pulp & Paper Industry activity includes Canadian Forest Products Limited's (Vancouver, British Columbia) $210 million grassroot lumber mill in Axis. Subscribers can read more information on the hydropower and lumber mill projects, the latter of which is expected to wrap up in September of this year.

According to a press statement from the Alabama Department of Commerce, South Korea-based Samkee Company Limited, which is a manufacturer of die-cast components for the global automotive sector, recently opened its first U.S. factory in Tuskegee. The $128 million grassroot aluminum die-casting plant will produce automotive components, including parts for engines, transmissions, electric vehicles and batteries. The plant will supply parts for Hyundai Motor Company's (Seoul, South Korea) vehicle-assembly plant in Montgomery, where the automaker is performing a $300 million expansion to accommodate the production of hybrid and fully-electric vehicles, according to the press release.
