Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--In the past few years, Alabama has seen an influx of high-dollar industrial project activity. Industrial Info is tracking $11.7 billion worth of projects under construction in the state. Thanks to a few large projects, the Metals & Minerals Industry leads Alabama in terms of overall construction investment, with more than $4.4 billion worth of projects underway in the state.

The single largest project underway in Alabama is Novelis Incorporated's (Atlanta, Georgia) new integrated aluminum rolling mill in Bay Minette, about 35 miles from Mobile. The facility will cater to the beverage-can market, with the flexibility to shift into the automotive market, and will be able to produce 1.3 billion pounds per year of finished aluminum goods at full production. An accompanying recycling center will increase Novelis' recycling capacity by 15 billion cans per year, raising it to 90 billion cans per year globally. Engineering, procurement and construction contractor Fluor Corporation (NYSE:FLR) (Irving, Texas) is expected to wrap up construction in mid-2025.

Novelis is taking steps to add solar power generation to the plant, as the company aims to reduce emissions from its operations. For additional information, see October 12, 2024, article - Aluminum Company Novelis Aims to Decarbonize. Fluor also is at work on a metals and minerals project for Nippon Steel Corporation (Tokyo, Japan), which is adding an electric arc furnace to its steel mill in Calvert . Construction of the furnace kicked off in early 2021 and is expected to be completed later this year, when the unit will begin ramping up to full production capacity of 1.5 million tons per year of steel slabs. While solar power projects in Alabama are few and far between, the state next year will be home to one of the largest solar panel-manufacturing operations in the U.S. in Trinity, about 30 miles southwest of Huntsville. Through monetary incentives, The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 has caused manufacturing geared toward the green energy and technology sectors to expand in the U.S. Among the top companies to embrace this new U.S. development is solar panel manufacturer First Solar Incorporated (NASDAQ:FSLR) (Tempe, Arizona), which has or is in the process of adding to its U.S. manufacturing footprint with construction in Ohio and Louisiana, as well as Alabama.

The grassroot plant in Trinity will be 2.4 million square feet, and upon completion, which is expected in 2025, will begin producing 3.5 gigawatts (GW) of panels per year, significantly helping meet First Solar's goal of producing 10 GW of per year of panels globally. The little solar power activity presently underway in Alabama comes from pipeline operator Williams Companies Incorporated (NYSE:WMB) (Tulsa, Oklahoma), which is building a 40-megawatt solar power addition at its natural gas-processing plant in Coden, in the Mobile area. The project is expected to be finished this summer. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Production Project Database can click here for more details.

Alabama's Industrial Manufacturing Industry accounts for the highest number of projects underway, although not the most spending. One of the longest-running of these projects has been the Alabama State Port Authority's expansion of the Mobile Ship Channel, which has been underway since 2020. The project aims to expand the channel to accommodate the larger cargo ships that are becoming the norm in seaborne shipping. The project entails deepening portions of the channel from 45 feet deep to 50 or more feet in depth. In addition, the bay channel is being widened by five feet for a stretch of three nautical miles. After more than four years of construction, the project is expected to reach its end in the first half of next year. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the project report.

The automotive sector has gained a firm footing in Alabama's industrial sector over the past several years. One of these manufacturers is South Korea's Hyundai Motor Company (Seoul). Hyundai held the grand opening of its factory in Montgomery in 2005, making modifications and changes to the plant as needed over the years. The rapid rise in electric vehicles is causing a sea change of sorts in the automotive sector, and Hyundai is squarely aimed at catering to this trend with the addition of new production and assembly equipment for the hybrid model of the company's popular Sante Fe model as well as the electrified GV70 sport utility vehicle. Work has been underway since 2022, and the project still has a way to go, with completion expected in late 2025. Subscribers can click here to view the project report.
