Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Alabama's automotive industry continues to flourish, with at least three major manufacturing plant upgrades and renovations in the works this year. In all, Industrial Info is tracking $1.57 billion in auto plant expansions and equipment additions in the Yellowhammer State.

"Thanks to an abundant, skilled workforce, best-in-class cooperative training and an extremely business-friendly economic climate, Alabama has since become home to three more plants and a burgeoning automotive industry that produced $6.6 billion worth of vehicles for export last year," according to the Alabama Department of Commerce. Mercedes-Benz US International (Vance, Alabama), Hyundai Motor Group (Seoul, South Korea) and Kamtek Incorporated (Birmingham, Alabama) are three of the largest ongoing automotive and accessory manufacturing projects this year.

The $1.3 billion Mercedes-Benz plant upgrade began in August this year and is due for completion in October 2017. Mercedes-Benz is building a 1.5 million-square-foot body shop and is renovating its existing body shop. In addition, the company is adding 139,930 square feet to an existing sports utility vehicle (SUV) assembly shop. The project also involves logistical and information technology upgrades, and installation of production and supporting equipment. For details on this project, see Industrial Info's project report.

Hyundai is expanding its manufacturing plant in Montgomery, Alabama, to meet demand for utility vehicles. The expansion would increase production by 300,000 vehicles per year. The project is set for completion in first-quarter 2017. The Montgomery facility currently manufactures Elantra compacts and Sonata midsize sedans. For details on this project, see Industrial Info's project report.

Kamtek (Birmingham, Alabama) plans to expand its panel stamping plant in Birmingham. The $450 million project at the 120,000-unit-per-year plant involves construction of a 201,000-square-foot building at the site. Construction is set to kick off in first-quarter 2016, with completion in second-quarter 2017. For details on this project, see Industrial Info's project report.

Also, Kamtek is building an automotive component facility in Birmingham, with a total investment value of $80 million. Kamtek produces stamped aluminum parts for Mercedes-Benz. For details on this project, see Industrial Info's project report.
