Written by Daniel Graeber for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The provincial leader of oil-rich Alberta was bringing a message to Florida that tariffs on North American trade benefit no one, her office said.

Premier Danielle Smith was to be a headline speaker at an event in Florida sponsored by PragerU, which bills itself as a "pro-American" video-content hub. Her office on Wednesday said she would carry a message to President Donald Trump's home state that decried the destructive impact of tariffs.

"This includes continuing to engage with influential Americans in the U.S. to make it clear that the continuation of destructive tariffs on Canadian goods and energy will cost hundreds of thousands of American and Canadian jobs and benefit no one," she said in a statement.

Smith was slated to speak on Thursday at a fundraiser event for PragerU, a conservative media nonprofit organization.

Trump on Wednesday announced a 25% tariff for auto imports, saying they would bring in $100 billion annually and prop up the domestic industry. With vehicles crossing North American borders several times before they roll off the assembly line, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said auto tariffs were a direct attack on his economy.

Like vehicles, energy corridors in North America are deeply entwined. Despite boasting the largest oil and gas reserves in the world, the United States is heavily dependent on Canadian energy. Taking in around 5.9 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day, the United States is a net importer of Canadian natural gas.

At 4 million barrels per day, meanwhile, Canada accounts for 60% of the total oil exported to the world's largest economy. Smith's office said energy products brought in US$93 billion last year, accounting for a large portion of provincial revenue.

"This is an important opportunity to gain support in the U.S. and add voices to the conversation that will help amplify Alberta's, and Canada's, calls to work together on solutions and to rebuild our important trade relationship," Smith said.

Trump imposed a 25% tariff, a tax on imports, on Canadian goods and a 10% tariff on Canadian energy products on March 4, but later paused implementation for certain goods. Those tariffs, notably on energy, could re-enter into force on April 2.

Canadian midstream infrastructure is linked heavily to the United States, though trade corridors are opening up. Expansions to the Trans Mountain crude oil pipeline to British Columbia and export options for liquefied natural gas on Canada's west coast could open the nation up to opportunities in the Asia-Pacific.

Tacitly ripping up a free-trade deal he helped broker with Canada and Mexico during a first term that ended in 2021, Trump is now imposing on Canadian sovereignty with calls to make the country part of the federal union along with sweeping tariff threats.

The row over the response on Canada, meanwhile, prompted Chrystia Freeland to stand down as finance minister and Justin Trudeau to resign as prime minister. Carney, for his part, called for snap elections next month.
