Released December 18, 2023 | SUGAR LAND

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Late last week, Alliant Energy Corporation (NASDAQ:LNT) (Madison Wisconsin) announced that it has completed the 99-megawatt (MW) Wautoma solar project in Dakota, Wisconsin. The project is one of several active solar projects from Alliant and others in Wisconsin, which account for nearly $5 billion in potential project activity.

Construction on the Wautoma solar farm began in the summer of 2022 on a 624-acre site. The facility uses nearly 240,000 thin-film, bifacial solar panels on a single-axis tracking system to provide nameplate generation of 99 MW, enough to power approximately 26,000 homes, according to Alliant.

Ben Lipari, assistant vice president of resource development at Alliant, said, "The completion of this project is a major accomplishment that will deliver safe, reliable, cost-effective energy to our customers for decades. ... A unique aspect of our project design included the repurposing of land at the Wautoma airport, which allowed us to diversify the project layout and maximize the value of underutilized land." But the Wautoma facility isn't the only project that Alliant has in store for Wisconsin. Industrial Info is tracking $1.3 billion worth of the company's active projects in the state, including seven other solar farms, some with accompanying battery energy storage systems (BESS) and most of which are presently under construction. Many of Alliant's solar farms under construction are smaller than the Wautoma plant, coming in at 50-75 MW of nameplate generation.

Examples include Alliant's solar project in Cassville, in the southeast of the state near the Iowa border. Construction began last year, and upon completion, which is expected in the near future, the facility will employ approximately 187,500 bifacial solar modules to generate 50 MW of power. Alliant is in the late planning stage for the addition of an accompanying 25-MW BESS unit for use when the sun isn't shining. Construction of this isn't expected to begin until early 2025, however. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the project reports on the solar farm and BESS.

While Alliant is busy with solar projects in Wisconsin, it is not the largest potential solar developer in the state. That honor goes to U.S. renewable energy behemoth Invenergy LLC (Chicago, Illinois), which has more than $1.5 billion worth of active solar projects in the state, although some of these have been deemed by Industrial Info as having a low probability (0-69%) of moving forward as planned.

Among Invenergy's projects nearing completion is a grassroot solar farm near Paris, Wisconsin, about 30 miles south of central Milwaukee. For more than two years, engineering, procurement and construction contractor Blattner Energy Incorporated (Avon, Minnesota) has been putting approximately 700,000 photovoltaic panels in place, which will use a single-axis tracking system to obtain output of 200 MW. Other Wisconsin solar projects have yet to begin construction. Expected to begin very soon is construction on Ranger Power's (Chicago) Badger State solar facility near Jefferson, about 50 miles west of Milwaukee. The project is expected to take about a year to complete, wrapping up in late 2024 or early 2025 and using more than 487,000 bifacial solar panels to provide 149 MW of power.
