Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Industrial Info is tracking more than $6.4 billion worth of industrial projects that presently are under construction in Wisconsin. Largely thanks to the decommissioning and dismantlement of a nuclear power plant, the Power Industry leads the state in terms of current spending, with more than $2.6 billion worth of projects under construction.

In October 2012, Dominion Energy Incorporated (NYSE:D) (Richmond, Virginia) announced that it would close the Kewaunee nuclear power station, about 25 miles from Green Bay, in 2013 for economic reasons. Throughout the years, steps have been taken to begin the dismantlement process, such as the removal of the remaining fuel assemblies to dry cask storage in 2017. However, the decommissioning process didn't see significant movement until 2022, when the plant's license was transferred to EnergySolutions Incorporated, which now is heading up the decommissioning and dismantlement process.

The decommissioning process consists of several pieces, including the decontamination of pipeline and other components, removal of the rod control housings and head service structures, as well as removal of the steam generator, pressurizer and other systems. Most of the work is expected to be wrapped up by the close of 2030. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Power Project Database can click here to learn more.

As one form of energy in Wisconsin gives way to another, the state is seeing an influx of solar power, which shows approximately $955 in projects in the construction phase within the state. In the completion process is Invenergy's Paris solar energy center, roughly 30 miles south of downtown Milwaukee. Engineering, procurement and construction company Blattner Energy Incorporated (Avon, Minnesota) is wrapping up the placement of 700,000 Jinko solar panels that are mounted on a single-axis tracking system. Construction on the project began in 2021, and upon the facility's completion and connection to the grid, it will provide approximately 200 megawatts of nameplate generation. The Pulp & Paper Industry also is seeing movement in Green Bay in the form of Georgia-Pacific LLC's (Atlanta, Georgia) addition of a 60,000- to 70,000-ton-per-year through-air-dried (TAD) tissue machine to convert bath tissue, paper towels and napkins. Construction started in 2022, and the machine is expected to begin operating toward the middle of this year. The Metals & Minerals Industry also features in Wisconsin's active construction. Among the state's largest projects in this industry is A.Y. McDonald Manufacturing Company's (Dubuque, Iowa) establishment of a grassroot brass foundry near Dickeyville. A.Y. McDonald produces fittings for the plumbing, natural gas and other sectors. Construction on the 360,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art foundry kicked off earlier this year and is expected to be completed in late 2026. It is the largest project in the company's 160+-year history. Associated with the new foundry is the expansion of a nearby 100,000-square-foot warehouse to house the additional parts rolling off of the new line. The warehouse expansion is expected to be completed this summer. Uline Incorporated (Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin) sells a range a packaging and shipping supplies, including boxes, packing tape, cushioning materials and stretch wrap. The company is expanding its Wisconsin footprint with the construction of grassroot distribution centers in Kenosha and Bristol. The Kenosha facility will be near the company's campus, about 40 miles south of central Milwaukee. The 1.44 million-square-foot facility will feature 41 shipping bays and high-dock doors and is expected to be completed toward the end of this year. The Bristol facility also will exceed 1 million square feet and will feature 105 dock doors and four drive-in docks and is expected to be wrapped up in the coming months. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the reports on the Kenosha and Bristol facilities.
