Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Aluminum die casting is a fabrication process in which molten aluminum is injected into a mold (usually steel) under high pressure in order to produce different shapes and parts with good accuracy. The process can be used for a variety of machinery and tools and is often seen in the automotive sector. Industrial Info is tracking hundreds of millions of dollars' worth of active projects at aluminum die casting plants in the U.S.

One of the largest current U.S. aluminum die casting projects was recently completed in Tuskegee, Alabama, where Samkee Company Limited (Gyeonggi, South Korea) developed a grassroot die casting plant that will be a Tier 1 supplier to South Korean carmaker Hyundai Motor Company (Seoul), which has an assembly plant in Montgomery, Alabama. The Tuskegee plant aims to keep up with Hyundai's strong North American market growth by providing components for engines and transmissions for both conventional and electric vehicles (EVs), along with battery parts. The project kicked off in early 2023, and the opening ceremony was held this summer. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Metals & Minerals Project Database can learn more by viewing the project report.

Automaker Stellantis NV (NYSE:STLA) (Hoofddorp, Netherlands), which is the parent company of Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep and other makes, is underway with the conversion and upgrade of a die casting plant in Kokomo, Indiana. The project, which kicked off in early 2023, involves converting existing die casting machines to produce parts for electric motors and transmissions. Among the parts cast at the plant will be a gearbox cover that will then be machined by another Stellantis plant in Kokomo. Opened in 1965, Stellantis claims the Kokomo Casting plant is the largest die-casting plant in the world. Subscribers can click here to learn more about the project.

Another project just got started in Limestone County, Alabama, that will allow Cast Products Incorporated (CPI) (Athens, Alabama) to create 14 jobs when completed. General contractor Premier Structures Incorporated (Athens) is constructing a 30,000-square-foot building addition that will include an automated foundry that will allow CPI's plant to double its 1.5 million tons per year of production. The company manufactures a range of cast products, catering in particular to the markets for specialty vehicles such as ambulances. CPI's new addition is expected to be completed in about a year's time. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the project report.

Another company that die casts for the automotive market is underway with an expansion of a plant in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, and already has plans for another phase of construction. Nemak SAB de CV (Garcia, Mexico) produces aluminum components for engine blocks, cylinder heads, transmission parts and structural components. The company is underway with the first two of three phases of an expansion of its Sheboygan plant. Phases 1 and 2 call for the construction of 49,500 square feet of new floor space, more than 35,000 square feet of which will be dedicated to die-casting production, accommodating two new 4,500-ton die-casting machines. In addition, a connector from the plant's melting area will be built. These two phases are nearing completion, after which Nemak plans to launch Phase 3, which includes adding two more machines and tooling storage space. This final portion of the project is expected to be completed by the end of next year. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the related project reports.

In addition to multiple capital projects, Industrial Info is tracking more than 30 active maintenance projects at die casting plants throughout the U.S. As should be expected, most of these are concentrated around the Great Lakes region with its large concentration of vehicle production. Industrial Info's coverage includes maintenance projects planned for this year, extending into 2026. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the related project reports.
