Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--According to The Aluminum Association (Washington, D.C.), North American aluminum demand rose 4.8% in 2022. This is due to several factors, such as higher demand for aluminum beverage containers and increased use of aluminum in automaking. The association cites a study showing that aluminum content per vehicle is expected to grow by an average of 100 pounds between 2020 and 2030 to 500 pounds per vehicle, a 233% increase over 1990 levels. With such market growth, aluminum projects, whether for casting, rolling or recycling are taking off, and Industrial Info is tracking billions of dollars' worth of U.S. aluminum-related project activity.

A few U.S. aluminum projects come in at more than $1 billion in total investment value. One of the largest projects kicked off in Bay Minette, Alabama, near Mobile, last year. Plant owner Novelis Incorporated (Atlanta, Georgia) is building a $2.5 billion grassroot aluminum rolling and recycling plant. The facility will cater to the beverage can market with flexibility to shift into automotive, and will be able to produce 1.3 billion pounds per year of finished aluminum goods. The recycling center will increase the company's recycling capacity by 15 billion cans per year, raising it to 90 billion cans globally. Engineering, procurement and construction contractor Fluor Corporation (NYSE:FLR) (Irving, Texas) is expected to wrap up construction in mid-2025. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Metals & Minerals Database can click here for more details on the project.

Novelis also is expanding its mill in Guthrie, Kentucky, which caters to the automotive sector, by constructing a $365 million recycling center that will increase sheet ingot capacity by 240 kilotons per year. The facility will be built adjacent to Novelis' automotive finishing plant and will be able to use the scrap aluminum remaining after parts are stamped from sheets. The center also will have the capability to process aluminum from vehicles at the end of their life. Novelis says the facility will reduce carbon emissions by more than 1 million tons per year and support its goal of reducing energy-intensity 10% by 2026. Subscribers can click here to learn more.

In Columbus, Mississippi, another $1 billion-plus aluminum project is underway. A new hot and cold rolling complex will mark Steel Dynamics Incorporated's (NASDAQ:STLD) (Fort Wayne, Indiana) entry into the flat-rolled aluminum products market, operating under the name Aluminum Dynamics. Steel Dynamics broke ground on the plant earlier this year. When it goes into production in the first half of 2025, the mill will focus on the production of aluminum sheet for cans, vehicle and industrial applications and will be able to produce about 650,000 metric tons of finished products annually. To support the mill, Steel Dynamics also is establishing two grassroot aluminum recycling plants, one in Mexico and the other in the Southwestern U.S., to supply aluminum slab. Subscribers can learn by viewing the project reports on the rolling mill, U.S recycling plant and Mexican recycling plant.

Crown Holdings Incorporated (NYSE:CCK) (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania), one of the biggest makers of aluminum beverage cans in the world, is putting the finishing touches on a grassroot can-manufacturing plant in Mesquite, Nevada. The facility will feature two production lines and six truck loading docks to cater to the uptick in demand for aluminum cans. Subscribers can click here to learn more.

In Tuskegee, Alabama, Samkee Company Limited (Pyeongtaek, South Korea) earlier this year began construction of a grassroot aluminum die casting plant for the automotive industry. The facility will produce high-pressure die-cast components, including parts for engines, transmissions and electric vehicles, and will be a Tier 1 supplier to Hyundai Motor Company's (Seoul, South Korea) auto plant in nearby Montgomery. The facility is expected to be completed by the end of next year. Subscribers can click here for more information.
