Amazon dominates capital distribution and warehousing project activity across the U.S., with Industrial Info Resources data showing 29 capital projects worth $4.28 billion. This leads all parent companies in project count and total investment value for the overall sector, which sits at $20 billion.
In reporting its second-quarter 2026 earnings in late July, Amazon boosted its capital spending outlook for 2026, to $220 billion from a previous estimate of $200 billion--with higher memory costs pushing spending above earlier expectations. While the tech giant did not break down the planned capital expenditures by geographical location or particular segment, it is expected most of the spend is attributed to data centers and related products. Industrial Info Resources is tracking $350 billion worth of active and planned data center projects from Amazon across the U.S.
Still, in the most recent earnings conference call, Amazon Chief Financial Officer Brian Olsavsky said the company is expanding deployment of robotics and automation in its fulfillment network.
Amazon's Distribution and Warehousing Projects
Amazon's major projects include two aimed at adding robotics, both of which are expected to wrap up next year: $500 million to convert a warehouse in Atlanta, Georgia, into a robotics-enabled first-mile fulfillment center, and $200 million for a brownfield fulfillment center in Naugatuck, Connecticut. The latter will feature 3.2 million square feet of space and is designed to handle up to 800,000 packages per day. First-mile facilities serve as the initial stage of the delivery supply chain, where products for customers are received, stored and then shipped.Industrial Info Resources offers more information on the efforts in its Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Industrial Manufacturing Project Database, where readers can find details--including construction schedules, investment values and necessary equipment--in project reports.
The company produces, engineers and tests its warehouse robots mainly in Massachusetts, including at a campus in Westborough. The GMI database shows billions' worth of active and proposed projects across the U.S. aimed at producing robots and robotic equipment, the bulk of which is geared toward the automotive industry. Later this year, Amazon expects to begin renovating a speculative building in Greenfield, Indiana, to provide about 1 million square feet of fulfillment space. Readers can view the project report.
While fulfillment centers pick, pack and ship customer orders direct to consumers, Amazon's distribution centers focus on storing long-term or bulk inventory in order to replenish fulfillment centers.
Construction of a grassroot distribution center in Amsterdam, New York, east of Albany, marks the highest-valued project ($621 million) from Amazon in the overall sector. The new five-story, 3.2 million-square-foot facility kicked off earlier this year and will increase regional distribution operations when it opens in early 2028. Readers can view the project report.
Other grassroot distribution centers are under construction in Rockville, Virginia; Terrell, Texas, east of Dallas; and Byhalia, Mississippi. With a total investment value of nearly $600 million, all three projects are expected to wrap up by early 2027.
Amazon's e-commerce network also features last-mile centers, smaller sites that serve as an order's final stop before delivery. Such facilities are currently being built in Redding, California--more than 100 miles north of Sacramento--and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Another is planned for Gaston, South Carolina, about 20 miles south of Columbia. View the project reports here.
