Researched by Industrial Info Resources East Asia (Kofu-shi, Japan)--More than $200 billion in capital power projects are due to start during the third quarter, approximately 60% of which are located in Asia. By the end of the third quarter, Asia will see at least $126 billion in capital power projects commence. Thermal power projects account for approximately 77% of all capital power projects in Asia, while renewable energy projects and nuclear energy projects account for 13% and 7%, respectively. Asia continues to lead the world in capital project starts per quarter, as China and India expand capacity to meet domestic demand.
Asia nuclear energy projects will amount to more than $8 billion this quarter, with the majority of projects centered in East and South Asia. Only two projects deal with the construction of new reactors, while the others are primarily upgrades or replacements.
According to Industrial Info's renewable energy database, renewable energy projects will total approximately $16 billion this quarter with more than 110 projects. The largest investments in Asia renewable energy projects are in China and India. One of China's first offshore windfarms, requiring a total investment value of $1 billion, commenced construction in July. This and other offshore windfarms that started construction this quarter are scheduled for completion during the fourth quarter of 2012. China holds the most wind power project starts this quarter, while India will see more than $3 billion in hydro projects commence. Coal-related projects will account for at least 70% of all power projects, while gas-related projects will only account for 20%.
Thermal power will see the largest number of project starts this quarter, accounting for approximately $98 billion. Like renewable energy, some of the largest investments will be in China and India, though other large investments have commenced in the Middle East. Two gas-fired power stations, each with capacities of more than 2,000 megawatts are expected for completion in 2014.
Next quarter, capital power project starts will climb higher than $210 billion. Investments in thermal power projects scheduled to start during the fourth quarter are expected to increase by 50%, while investments in renewable energy and nuclear energy projects scheduled to commence will each jump at least 200%.
