Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Balfour Beatty plc (London, England) is providing engineering and construction services to places that are seeing some of the strongest demand for energy and infrastructure-related projects, including metropolitan hotspots in the U.S. and Europe that feature in the 10 highest-valued projects. Industrial Info is tracking more than $3 billion in active projects involving Balfour Beatty, about $1.2 billion of which are in the U.S.

Balfour Beatty's top-valued project in the Power Industry is bridging the output of two countries: the $718.2 million Peuplingues-Folkestone submarine line under the English Channel, which will connect a new converter station in Calais, France, to an existing station near the southern English coast. Balfour Beatty will perform installation, design and jointing for the DC cables. According to Siemens AG, which was awarded construction of the new substation, the 51-kilometer link will enhance power supply reliability in both countries and bring more renewable energy to both grids. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
In England, Balfour Beatty is playing a lead role in two major renewable-fueled power plants. With waste-management provider Urbaser, Balfour Beatty is constructing the $258.1 million Javelin Park Waste-to-Energy Plant in Gloucester, which will generate 14.5 megawatts (MW) from 190,000 tons per year of solid waste. Another project with Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) (Cincinnati, Ohio), the $78.9 million West Thurrock biomass combined heat and power (CHP) plant in Essex, will begin construction next spring and eventually generate 21.8 MW from 160,000 tonnes per year of waste wood. The projects are set to finish construction in early 2019 and late 2020, respectively. For more information, see Industrial Info's reports on the Javelin Park and West Thurrock projects.
Another renewable project under construction and set to wrap up next year is the state-owned, $90 million Peusangan I hydropower station in Bireuen, Indonesia. It is expected to generate 44.2 MW from a pair of Andritz Francis hydraulic turbines, with Balfour Beatty's Indonesian subsidiary focused on transmission line and substation development. When combined with a planned second phase, the full facility is expected to become the largest hydropower project in Indonesia. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Balfour Beatty's Irish subsidiary is preparing to begin construction on a $396.2 million runway at Dublin International Airport later this year. The 3,110-meter strip will support two existing runways. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Transportation, Pharmaceutical Projects Lead in U.S.
The highest-valued projects involving Balfour Beatty in North America involve transportation systems, led by Caltrain's (San Carlos, California) $696.6 million Peninsula Corridor Electrification Project in San Francisco, California. Caltrain is modernizing its system by converting diesel-hauled trains to electric multiple unit (EMU) trains, which Caltrain says will improve speed, capacity, safety and comfort, while reducing noise and pollution. Roughly 82 kilometers of track will be affected. The project kicked off last year and is expected to wrap up in late 2020. For more information on this project, see Industrial Info's project report.
Another major rail line is under construction in Colorado: Denver Regional Transportation District's $233.1 million Denver Southeast Corridor Extension. The 2.3-mile commuter rail addition will feature three new stations and is expected to wrap up next summer. For more information on this project, see Industrial Info's project report.
Three university-based projects in North Carolina's Pharmaceutical & Biotech Industry also can be found among Balfour Beatty's 10 highest-valued plans: Duke University's (Durham, North Carolina) $103 million, third-phase Medical Sciences Research Building in Durham, which is expected to house bench lab research programs for the School of Medicine; the University of North Carolina's (UNC) $96 million science research building addition in Charlotte, which is expected to provide interdisciplinary research for multiple disciplines; and North Carolina A&T State University's proposed, $90 million engineering building addition in Greensboro, which will include new laboratories, manufacturing and teaching space. Balfour Beatty is performing construction management services for all three. For more information, see Industrial Info's reports on the Duke, UNC and A&T projects.
