Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Bechtel Corporation (San Francisco, California), the largest engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) company in the U.S., has offices and projects on six continents. The Engineering News-Record ranked Bechtel third on its list of 2015's top 250 international contractors. According to Industrial Info's project database, global projects that involve Bechtel in some capacity have a total investment value (TIV) of $143.13 billion. The 10 highest-valued alone are concentrated in three industries--Power, Oil & Gas, and Chemical Processing--and account for more than half of the TIV.
Among major industries, Oil & Gas Production accounts for more than half of the TIV for active projects involving Bechtel, while nuclear power plant projects make up almost all of the $43 billion in Power Industry projects.
As with another leading EPC company, Jacobs Engineering Group Incorporated (NYSE:JEC) (Pasadena, California), Bechtel's two highest-valued projects are nuclear power plants. Bechtel recently signed up to perform EPC services at Horizon Nuclear Power Limited's (Gloucester, England) $20.22 billion Wylfa Newydd plant in Cemaes Bay, Wales. Jacobs and JGC Corporation (Yokohama, Japan) also are part of the team. Bechtel also is performing engineering services at Dominion Generation's (NYSE:D) (Richmond, Virginia) $11 billion Unit 3 addition at North Anna Nuclear Power Station near Mineral, Virginia. Dominion is pressing forward on the 1,500-MW unit, despite opposition from environmental activists and the Virginia attorney general's office, which said the project was economically inefficient and should be halted. Under current plans, GE-Hitachi would provide one of its Economic Simplified Boiling Water Reactors (ESBWR) to power a General Electric (NYSE:GE) steam turbine generator. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
In a recent interview with Fortune magazine, Bechtel Chief Operating Officer Brendan Bechtel, who is set to become chief executive officer in September, hailed nuclear as "the only clean solution capable of filling the void as the world moves away from fossil fuels" and plans to invest in the development of smaller, more economically efficient reactors. But like any nuclear project, the idea will cost billions of dollars and years of reviewing to even get off the ground.
In the Oil & Gas Industry, Bechtel is performing EPC services on two of the most highly anticipated projects to come out of Australia: the $10.85 billion first phase of the Wheatstone LNG production facility, and the $6 billion second phase of the Australia Pacific (Curtis Island) LNG production facility. Both projects are under construction; late last month, Bechtel announced that the fifth of six production trains at Curtis Island had begun producing liquefied natural gas (LNG). The last train is expected to begin producing LNG later this year.
The Curtis Island projects is owned by Australia Pacific LNG Pty Limited (Brisbane, Queensland), a partnership among ConocoPhillips Company (NYSE:COP) (Houston, Texas), Origin Energy (Sydney, New South Wales) and Sinopec Group (Beijing, China). The second phase of the full project, which totals $18.15 billion, involves adding a 4.5 million-metric-ton-per-year LNG production train. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
The Wheatstone facility is expected to begin processing natural gas by the end of this year, and project owner Chevron Australia Pty Limited (Onslow, Western Australia), a subsidiary of Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX) (San Ramon, California), wants to produce the first LNG by the middle of 2017. However, according to The West Australian, Australia's National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Environmental Management Authority recently demanded that Chevron revise and resubmit its environmental plan, following concerns about produced water.
The first phase of the Wheatstone full project, which totals $21.3 billion, involves building two LNG trains, each with a capacity of 4.45 million metric tons per year. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
The six other highest-value projects involving Bechtel are:
- $7 billion: Anadarko Petroleum Corporation's Afungi LNG Liquefaction Plant in Palma, Mozambique
