Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Thorntonbank Windfarm, located 28 kilometers off the Belgian coast near Zeebrugge, is scheduled to have all wind turbines connected to the national grid by the end of 2012. The plant will have a total generating capacity of 300 megawatts (MW), enough to provide 600,000 people with renewable energy. The total investment cost for the project is more than $1 billion.
The Thorntonbank windfarm is being built by C-Power N.V. (Antwerp, Belgium) and will consist of 60 wind turbines with a power output of 5 MW each, six of which are expected to be operational by the end of November. The turbines were built by REpower Systems A.G. (FRA:RPW) (Hamburg, Germany). The remaining wind turbines are also expected to be built by the company. A 37-kilometer, 150-kilovolt cable will connect the windfarm to the shore.
C-Power is a consortium of five Belgian companies: EDF Energies Nouvelles S.A. (EPA:EEN) (Paris, France), DEME (Antwerp, Belgium), Societe Regionale d'Investissement de Wallonie (Liege, Belgium), Socofe (Liege) and Nuhma (Limburg, Belgium). The company was created to develop and implement the offshore windfarm on the Thornton Sandbank.
