Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--GIGA Storage Belgium (Amstelveen) is moving ahead with the Green Turtle project, a battery energy storage system (BESS) with a capacity of 2,800 megawatt-hours (or 2.8 gigawatt-hours), marking it one of the largest battery parks in Belgium.
Designed by European engineering consultancy Sweco (Stockholm), this facility is expected to commence construction in summer 2025, with completion aimed for 2028, providing 700 megawatts (MW) of output capacity that could supply energy to around 385,000 households annually.
The Green Turtle project is expected to reduce the country's reliance on gas-fired power plants, which currently generate approximately 24.19% of Belgium's electricity, while nuclear power accounts for 40.7%. This flagship initiative underscores Belgium's commitment to achieving a sustainable energy transition in Europe and aligns with broader continental efforts to strengthen battery storage capabilities.
