Reported by Annette Kreuger, Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Tennessee is a beautiful state, offering an abundance of delights ranging from barbeque to bourbon. A bigger feather in its cap is an impressive level of life science investment. A recent analysis of active reported projects in Industrial Info's Pharmaceutical & Biotech Industry Online Database revealed 31 projects worth $2.3 billion in various stages of planning, engineering and construction across the state.

Almost half of the total is thanks to ongoing planning for the $1 billion Federal Research Laboratory Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) Second Target Site. Planned for Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, the project has been in the planning stage for several years, awaiting funding before moving forward.

See below for a chart of active Tennessee life science projects.

The projects that remain are a varied blend of commercial and public investments. In Murfreesboro, Middle Tennessee State is in the midst of building a $147 million science building. Designed by Thomas Miller & Partners (Nashville, Tennessee), the 250,000-square-foot building will offer research space for biology, chemistry and related fields of study. Turner Construction (Brentwood, Tennessee) should complete the facility in spring of 2015.

Fresenius Medical Care (Waltham, Massachusetts) chose Knoxville as the location to invest $140 million to add a new dialysis medical care products plant. The company will renovate and equip the former 280,000-square-foot Panasonic building to supply the east coast market. Construction should take roughly two years for all renovations.

The state scored another plum with the Morristown selection by Colgate-Palmolive (NYSE:CL) for a production expansion of its oral care product line. The $25 million project will add an 80,000-square-foot building to produce creams, rinses and other oral products used by dental professionals. O'Neal Incorporated (Greenville, South Carolina) is the engineering, procurement and construction company for the expansion, which is scheduled to begin later this year.

Of the 31 active projects in Tennessee, 21 have a future kick-off date and carry a total investment value of $1.8 billion. The future opportunities and projects range in size from the aforementioned $1 billion SNS project down to $1 million scheduled maintenance programs.
