Summary
Projects targeting roofing materials and solutions are driving more than $1 billion in current U.S. construction projects.A Necessity
A roof over one's head is considered a key need to be met in the hierarchy of existence, and U.S. roofing materials companies are stepping up to the plate with more than $1 billion worth of active and planned capital construction projects, according to Industrial Info Resources data. The manufacture of asphalt shingles is a particularly dominant theme in roofing materials projects, although one company plans to expand its metal roofing offerings.Current Construction
Asphalt shingles manufacturing is a big component of current roofing materials project movement, and this is easily in seen in Newton, Kansas, where GAF Materials Corporation broke ground on a new shingles-manufacturing plant last year. Construction of the 275,000-square-foot grassroot facility is expected to be completed next year, but the plant isn't expected to reach full production until later. Subscribers can access details of the project, including construction timelines, key contact details, and equipment and service needs, by clicking here. This compares to another asphalt shingles project that broke ground in Prattville, Alabama, earlier this year. Owens Corning is building the plant with the aim to manufacture laminate shingles, a special type of asphalt shingle that can be laid in patterns and laminated together, typically heavier and more durable than standard shingles. Owens Corning says the 250,000-square-foot plant is expected to produce 6 million squares of laminate shingling annually, with one square covering 100 square feet of roof. The Wall Street Journal reported earlier this year that commercial roofings system provider Carlisle Companies is making overtures to acquire Owens Corning, which also manufactures insulation and other building products.
Construction on yet another grassroot asphalt shingle plant also is wrapping up in Clinton, Iowa, where Atlas Roofing is gearing up to start initial production from two shingles production lines by the end of this year, ramping up output into 2027.
Beyond Shingles
Other construction beyond asphalt shingles is underway elsewhere. An especially notable product in this area comes from SOPREMA, which is building a grassroot plant in Ennis, Texas, to produce its commercial roofing products. The Ennis plant is geared specifically toward polyvinyl chloride (PVC) commercial roofing membranes. While encompassing more than roofing, another plant broke ground earlier this year that will manufacture roof and wall panels that use steel framing and a foam core. Guardian Structural Technologies' SHIELD system can then be overlaid with other roofing products when used in roofing applications to provide both structure and insulation.
Future Roofing Materials Projects
Other similar U.S. projects are planned to break ground in the future, but at least two companies plan to break from current activity's status quo and take aim at metal roofing products. EDCO offers a range of building products, with steel roofing that is designed to resemble other roofing materials as a key product in its line. EDCO is consolidating two operations into a new plant in Chaska, Michigan, where the company will expand its production of metal roofing and siding products. Construction is expected to kick off by the end of this year and last about a year.European metal roofing and cladding provider Bravo International also plans to enter the U.S. market, starting with the rLhttps://www.industrialinfo.com/dash/project_report.jsp?PROJECT_ID=301223066&setFilter=renovation of an existing structure near Dallas, Texas, and another manufacturing facility in Detroit, Michigan. The anticipated startup of the facilities remains some ways off, with construction and equipment on both expected to be completed in 2028.
Industrial Info Resources also is tracking details of more than 50 planned maintenance events at U.S. plants related to roofing materials.
Key Takeaways
- Roofing materials are driving more than $1 billion in current U.S. construction projects.
- The manufacture of asphalt shingles is a key component of existing projects.
- Multiple U.S. projects targeting metal roofing systems are planned to break ground in the future.
