Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Hungarian chemical producer BorsodChem Rt (Kazincbarcika, Hungary) has awarded Uhde (Dortmund, Germany), a subsidiary of ThyssenKrupp AG (Dusseldorf, Germany), the engineering and construction contract for an ethylene dichloride (EDC) unit addition at BorsodChem's petrochemical complex in Kazincbarika, Hungary. Uhde will perform basic and detailed engineering, as well as licensing the technology, Vintec's oxychlorination process, and managing the construction of the new unit.
Utilizing one of the world's largest oxychlorination reactors, the unit's estimated production capacity will be 225,000 metric tons per year of ethylene dichloride, which will in turn be used to increase the production capacity of vinyl chloride monomers (VCM) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) at the site. Costs are estimated at approximately $60 million for the new EDC unit, which should be completed and commissioned in the second half of 2004.
